A 3 min read

Yale School of Management will now offer Management Science concentration in both its MBA and Master of Advanced Management programs that will allow non-American graduates to extend their stay in the U.S. to up to 36 months. The new STEM concentration will be available to currently enrolled students in the Class of 2020 and 2021, as well as incoming students.

Additionally, all students in Yale SOM’s  Master in Asset Management Program will qualify for STEM-certification.

To be eligible, students in the Master of Advanced Management (MAM) and MBA programs will complete the required coursework in management science concentration.

Some of the business schools that have designated part of their full-time MBA programs as STEM include Michigan Ross, Columbia, UNC Kenan-Flagler, Dartmouth Tuck, and Northwestern Kellogg.

The new management science concentration in the Yale MBA program will draw on the Yale SOM faculty’s broad expertise in analytics and management.

Courses such as data analysis and Causal Inferences, Big Data, and Customer Analytics will be offered under this concentration.

“The STEM concentration is a signal of the student’s depth of knowledge in a field of growing importance to organizations in all sectors of the economy.” Anjani Jain says. “The school believes that the body of knowledge in this field will continue to grow rapidly. Also, Yale SOM curriculum gives graduates the foundation upon which they will continue to learn as they assume roles of greater responsibility and leadership in their organizations.”

Benefits of a STEM MBA Program

STEM programs offer a mix of technical and business education. Thus, a STEM MBA graduate finds employment in specialized fields related to technology and analytics.

Moreover, in a report by Jacqueline Varas, Director of Immigration and Trade at American Action Forum, it highlights that there will be a shortage of 1.1 million STEM workers by 2024. This means the scope of opportunity for STEM graduates in the United States is high.

Additionally, STEM MBA graduates will be able to leverage the OPT extension period after graduation. STEM OPT extension is 24 months of temporary training in an approved STEM field.

OPT stands for Optional Practical training, which is offered to students who have completed their degree and want to extend their training.

A typical graduate gets 12 months OPT as compared to 36 months OPT for a STEM graduate.

Here is complete information on OPT.

For international students in F-1 status studying  STEM-designated degrees are eligible to extend their visa to up to 3 years without an H-1B visa.
