GRE General test fee
Based on your location, you’ll have to pay between $220 and $213 to register for the GRE. As mentioned earlier, the registration fee for the GRE general test is $220 except China ($213.3).
Apart from the GRE registration fee, you’ll have to pay a reschedule fee in case you want to change your appointment date or if you want to change your test center.

How to pay your GRE registration fee?
You can pay your GRE fee online using your credit or debit card, PayPal, or through an e-check service. The e-check should be drawn against US bank accounts only.
You can pay through money order or a certified check or a voucher. Payment can also be made through personal paper checks drawn against US bank accounts only. Also, payment options may be limited because of your location.

Can you pay your GRE exam fee via paper check?
Payments may also be made by personal paper checks. Make payable to ETS-GRE (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only). If paying by check, make sure you comply with the following:
- Bank name and its address should be preprinted on the face of the check
- The check must have a preprinted check number
- The check must include the candidate or payee name and address
- Check date CANNOT be over 90 days old
- New bank account starter checks missing the preprinted name and address are not acceptable
Also, note that ETS does not accept cash payments.
GRE fee waiver – GRE Fee Reduction program
ETS offers a GRE fee reduction voucher which reduces the registration fee by 50%. You can use it for only one GRE General Test and/or one GRE Subject Test. All test takers also get free access to GRE preparation materials which would otherwise cost $100. These test prep materials are:

GRE Fee reduction Eligibility
In order to get the GRE fee waiver, you need to be eligible for the GRE fee reduction program. In order to be eligible for the GRE fee waiver program:
- You must be a US citizen or resident alien
- Unemployed
- A college senior or a college graduate not currently enrolled
- Part of national programs for underrepresented
If you are a college senior
- you must be receiving financial aid in the US, Us territories, or Puerto Rico
- You must also a dependent, who has a FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) that shows a parental contribution of not more than $2,500 for the senior year, or self-supporting and have a SAR that shows a contribution of not more than $3,000 for the senior year
Unenrolled college graduates must
- Have applied for financial aid, and
- Have a SAR that shows a self-supporting status and a contribution of not more than $3,000
In case you’re unemployed you must be
- A US citizen or resident alien and 18 years of age or older
- currently unemployed and have become unemployed within the past six months
- able to submit a copy of an Unemployment Benefits Statement from the past 90 days as proof of unemployment
