What are the errors in the original sentence?

  • Clause 1: Unlike computer skills or other technical skills, there is a disinclination on the part of many people to recognize the degree
  • Clause 2: to which their analytical skills are weak.

This sentence has Parallelism Comparison Error. The sentence illogically compares the following entities.

  • Element 1: computer skills or other technical skills
  • Element 2: the fact that there is disinclination on the part of people

Due to this error, the meaning of the sentence is not clear.

Answer Choice Analysis

Choice BParallelism Comparison Error – This choice establishes comparison between the following two entities.  This comparison is illogical.

  • Element 1:  Computer skills or other technical skills
  • Element 2:  many people

Choice CMeaning Error – This choice changes the intended meaning of the sentence.  It states that analytical skills bring out a disinclination in people to recognize that people are weak to a degree.  On the other hand computer skills or other technical skills do not bring out this disinclination in people.  This is clearly not the intended inferred meaning of the original sentence.  Also, note how this sentence talks about weakness and not specifically weakness in a specific area such as analytical skills or computer or technical skills.

Choice D – No error

Choice E – This sentence has two errors:

Meaning Error – This sentence presents a contrast.  However the manner in which “while” has been used, it may be construed to present the meaning of “at the same time”.  Thus there is ambiguity pertaining to the meaning communicated by “while”.  Furthermore, the implied meaning of “recognize weakness” is different from saying “recognize that one is weak”.

Wordy Construction – “have a disinclination” is more wordy that “are disinclined”.

What are the key take-away messages?

  1. The comparison or contrast in a sentence should be logical.
  2. If the original sentence does not communicate logical meaning, then you must try to infer the correct meaning and select the choice that communicates that meaning.
