The 2026–27 MBA application cycle is underway. Whether you are preparing for an upcoming fall deadline or planning ahead for Round 2 or Round 3, understanding each school’s requirements will help you organize your research, choose your stories and build a thoughtful application.
In this first part, I cover six leading programs: Kellogg, Wharton, Berkeley Haas, Columbia, Duke Fuqua and UCLA Anderson. Essay questions do more than set a writing task: they reveal the experiences, motivations and contributions admissions committees want to understand.
Updated September 22, 2026. Some September deadlines have already passed; they are retained for reference. Dates below are for the regular full-time MBA unless otherwise stated. Essay descriptions are summaries; follow each school’s linked instructions for exact wording, submission times and special applicant requirements.
1. Kellogg School of Management

Written and video essays
Kellogg’s required written essay has two parts within a combined 550-word maximum: explain the experiences and decisions behind your ambitions and why an MBA makes sense now, then discuss what you will contribute to your classmates. Reapplicants also address their growth and preparation since the previous application in 250 words.
The video component now consists of five questions, with 60 seconds for each response.
What has changed?
Kellogg has reduced its required written essays from two to one and increased its video questions from three to five. In my view, the greater emphasis on video may help admissions committees assess communication, confidence and authenticity alongside the written application. Applicants should prepare for both formats.

2. The Wharton School

Essay requirements
- 50 words: your immediate professional goal after the MBA.
- 150 words: your medium- and long-term goals after Wharton.
- 350 words: how your background prepares you to add value to the Wharton community.
- Reapplicants — 250 words: reflection, growth and relevant changes since applying previously.
- Additional information — 500 words: relevant context not covered elsewhere, including circumstances that need explanation.
Interview notifications are scheduled for October 28, 2026; February 19, 2027; and April 16, 2027, respectively.
What should applicants focus on?
Career clarity and contribution remain central. Treat the short goal responses and the community essay as connected parts of your story, while making sure each response answers its own question. The reapplicant essay applies to reapplicants, rather than every applicant.

3. Berkeley Haas

Essay requirements
The required video asks you to introduce yourself and discuss an activity that makes you feel alive and why. Plan for one to two minutes, with a two-minute maximum; Haas allows two recording attempts.
The required written essay has a 300-word maximum. It covers your post-MBA goals, the Haas resources that support them, and how you will adapt as your career develops. The supplemental background response and optional statement each allow up to 300 words; consult the school’s instructions for when each section is relevant.
What has changed?
The career essay now explicitly asks about adaptability. Do more than describe a destination: consider how you will respond to change while pursuing your goals. Haas continues to seek an understanding of your experiences and alignment with its community.

4. Columbia Business School
The following dates are for August 2027 entry, rather than the separate January-entry route.

Applications are due by 12 noon Eastern Time. Interview decisions are due by November 2, 2026; February 17, 2027; and April 30, 2027, respectively.
Essay requirements
Two short answers ask about your immediate post-MBA goal and your plans for the summer after the first year. Each allows 50 characters, not 50 words.
- 500 words: goals over the next three to five years and your long-term ambition.
- 250 words: an example demonstrating an inclusive leadership skill, or an example of improving collaboration or community in an organization.
- 250 words: how you would help shape your own MBA experience at Columbia.
- Optional — 500 words: explanation of relevant concerns or personal context.
The current official instructions offer two routes for the second essay. Choose the route that best fits your actual experience, and be precise about your actions and their outcome.

5. Duke Fuqua

- 100 words: your preferred post-MBA career plan and an alternative.
- 25 Random Things: a numbered list that helps the school know you beyond your professional and academic record. Maximum two pages and 750 words.
- 500 words, one page: three ways you expect to contribute to the Fuqua community.
- Optional — 500 words, one page: circumstances requiring explanation.
What should applicants focus on?
Fuqua’s application continues to emphasize fit, leadership and community. Have fun with the personal list: it is an opportunity to show dimensions of yourself that may not appear in your résumé. Make your proposed contributions specific to your interests and understanding of Fuqua.

6. UCLA Anderson

Current 2026–27 essay requirements
- 250 words: short- and long-term career goals, how an MBA supports them, and the Anderson resources you expect to use.
- 250 words: how you hope classmates will describe you at graduation, including the qualities or values you will demonstrate.
- 50 words: the first thing you would tell your classmates about yourself.
- Optional — 250 words: extenuating circumstances or additional relevant context.
The three required responses still total 550 words, but the current prompts and allocation differ from the earlier version of this guide. Answer the current questions rather than reusing last year’s responses. The optional essay is for useful context, and Anderson does not give a preference to applicants simply for completing it.

What these requirements mean for your application
Prepare for video as well as writing
Kellogg’s greater use of video makes spoken communication an important part of preparation. Practice expressing your experiences clearly and naturally, while keeping the substance consistent with your written application.
Show leadership and impact
Leadership, initiative and measurable impact remain central themes. Choose specific experiences that show what you did and what changed as a result.
Clarify your goals and contributions
Schools want to understand why you need an MBA and what you will bring to their community. Research each program before writing about its fit with your goals.
Give yourself time for reflection
My experience working with MBA applicants over the past 15 years has taught me that applicants who start early are often the most successful. Strong applications are rarely built in a few weeks. School research, networking, self-reflection, recommendation planning and essay development all take time.
Choose an upcoming round that gives you enough time to submit your strongest complete application, then work backward from its deadline.
