MBA Application Deadlines and Essays 2026–27, Part 2: HBS, Stanford, Yale, Stern, Ross, Darden and Booth

The 2026–27 application cycle brings a mixture of familiar essay themes, shorter written responses and more video assessment. Whether your target deadline is in the fall or a later round, understanding these differences can help you plan your application and choose the strongest examples from your experience.

This second part covers Harvard Business School, Stanford GSB, Yale SOM, NYU Stern, Michigan Ross, Virginia Darden and Chicago Booth. Part 1 covers Kellogg, Wharton, Haas, Columbia, Duke Fuqua and UCLA Anderson.

Updated September 22, 2026. Past deadlines remain in the tables for reference. These are regular full-time MBA dates unless stated otherwise. The essay descriptions below are summaries; use the official links for exact prompts, submission times and requirements for your application route.

1. Harvard Business School

Required essays

• 300 words: how your choices have shaped your career and aspirations.
• 250 words: experiences that have influenced your leadership and investment in other people.
• 250 words: an example of curiosity and its effect on your growth.

My takeaway

These three dimensions help the school understand more than your accomplishments. Reflect on how you make choices, how you support others and how you learn. Purposeful career aspirations, leadership and intellectual curiosity remain central to the story.

2. Stanford Graduate School of Business

Required essays and optional responses

The first essay explores what matters most to you and why, with a 650-word maximum. The second asks how Stanford fits your aspirations, with a 350-word maximum. Applicants to both the MBA and MSx programs have an additional essay, up to 350 words, about their contribution to the MSx community.

The optional impact section allows up to three examples, each limited to 1,200 characters, describing a meaningful contribution within the past five years. Other optional fields should be used according to their individual instructions in the application.

My takeaway

I encourage applicants to consider the impact section carefully when it can reveal meaningful contributions not explained elsewhere. Describe the situation, your actions and the difference you made. Avoid repeating material simply to fill an optional field. Use additional-context sections when they help readers understand your background or circumstances.

3. Yale School of Management

Essay requirements

Choose one essay, up to 500 words, about one of three topics: a significant commitment and your actions to sustain it; a meaningful community and your contributions and learning; or a major challenge, your response and its influence on you.

The optional information section is for relevant explanation, rather than another required essay.

My takeaway

Do not try to guess which prompt is the “best.” Choose the one that reflects a meaningful experience and gives you room for specific examples and honest reflection. The story should help the reader understand your motivations, decisions and growth.

4. NYU Stern School of Business

Stern’s initial notification may be an interview invitation, a waitlist offer or a denial; it is not necessarily a final admission decision.

Essay requirements

• Professional aspirations — 500 words maximum: short-term career goals and why Stern is the necessary next step.
• Pick Six: six images, each with a one-sentence caption, and an introduction of no more than three sentences. Submit one PDF.
• Optional additional information — 500 words maximum: relevant context or important aspects of your candidacy not apparent elsewhere.

My takeaway

The current application pairs a career essay with the distinctive visual essay; the earlier “Change” essay is no longer listed. Use Pick Six to show your personality, values, interests and experiences beyond academic and professional achievements. Use the optional section thoughtfully when it adds important context. The career essay limit is 500 words, correcting the conflicting 150-word label in the earlier guide.

5. Michigan Ross

Essay requirements

The 300-word career essay covers your short-term goal and how Ross’s offerings support your first role after graduation.

For the 200-word impact and growth essay, select one of three options: responding when an important plan went wrong; sustaining effort for more than six months toward a positive result; or making a positive difference to a community or individual. The optional explanation permits up to 250 words.

My takeaway

The second essay offers three routes to show who you are beyond your résumé. Choose the story with the most meaningful evidence, rather than the prompt that appears easiest. Be specific about your actions and what the experience reveals about you.

6. Virginia Darden

Written and video responses

Darden asks for two 200-word written responses: introduce an aspect of yourself beyond your résumé, and explain your short-term post-MBA goal and its connection to your long-term career vision.

The new video essay gives you 90 seconds to respond to a randomly selected admissions question. The format is now published, replacing the earlier “details to come” announcement.

My takeaway

With 400 words across the two required written responses, use the written and video elements together to present a rounded picture of your candidacy. Prepare to communicate naturally and think clearly, rather than aiming for a perfectly rehearsed performance. Darden’s three spring deadlines also provide more options for applicants preparing later in the cycle.

7. Chicago Booth

Required short responses

Booth requires four responses with a 300-character limit per response. They cover your immediate career goal, your long-term career goal, an uploaded image and its meaning, and a distinctive personal fact. Characters include more than words, so pay attention to the application’s counter.

An optional response allows up to 300 words for explanation or additional relevant details. The separate Chicago Booth Scholars deferred route has an April 1, 2027 deadline and June 24, 2027 decision notification.

My takeaway

These short responses require exceptional precision. Choose the details that matter most and use the image thoughtfully to convey something personal. Focus on clear meaning rather than trying to convert the character allowance into a fixed number of words.

Application themes to keep in mind

Make every word count

Prepare to speak as well as write

Darden’s video essay and Kellogg’s expanded video component in Part 1 make communication practice an important part of preparation. In my view, these formats give schools another way to understand applicants’ authenticity and ability to think on their feet.

Use meaningful examples

Leadership, initiative, resilience, career clarity and self-awareness remain important themes. Authentic experiences supported by specific evidence are more compelling than generic statements about what you believe a school wants to hear.

Final thoughts

My experience with MBA applicants over the past 15 years has taught me that a strong application needs time. School research, networking, reflection, recommendation planning and revision should begin well before your chosen deadline. Select the upcoming round in which you can present your strongest complete application.
