Solution

Steps 1 & 2: Understand Question and Draw Inferences

In this question, we are given

  • On a map, ½ inch represents 100 miles.

We need to determine

  • As per the map, the distance between city X and city Y, in miles.

As we do not have any other information regarding the distance between city X and city Y, let us now analyse the individual statements.

Step 3: Analyse Statement 1

As per the information given in statement 1, city X is 3 inches from city Y on the map.

We know, ½ inch represents 100 miles.

  • Therefore, 3 inches represent 100 × 2 × 3 = 600 miles

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer the question.

Step 4: Analyse Statement 2

As per the information given in statement 2, cities X and Y are each 300 miles from city Z.

  • However, we don’t know whether the cities are in straight line or any specific information about their position with respect to each other.

Hence, statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the question.

Step 5: Combine Both Statements Together (If Needed)

Since we can determine the answer from statement 1 individually, this step is not required.

Hence, the correct answer choice is option A.
