Is the integer p divisible by 5? – OG 2020 Question #299 with Solution

A < 1 min read

Is the integer p divisible by 5?

  1. p is divisible by 10.
  2. p is not divisible by 15.

Solution

Steps 1 & 2: Understand Question and Draw Inferences

In this question, we are given

  • The number p is an integer.

We need to determine

  • Whether p is divisible by 5 or not.

As we are not given any additional information about p, let us analyse the individual statements.

Step 3: Analyse Statement 1

As per the information given in statement 1, p is divisible by 10.

  • 5 is a factor of 10 – hence, if a number is divisible by 10, then it is also divisible by 5.
  • Therefore, p is divisible by 5.

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer the question.

Step 4: Analyse Statement 2

As per the information given in statement 2, p is not divisible by 15.

  • If p = 29, then p is not divisible by either 15 or 5.
  • If p = 25, then p is not divisible by 15 but divisible by 5.

As there can be multiple possibilities, we can say statement 2 is not sufficient to answer the question.

Step 5: Combine Both Statements Together (If Needed)

Since we can determine the answer from statement 1 individually, this step is not required.

Hence, the correct answer choice is option A.
