How to Approach
Sentence Correction

What will You Learn?
In this session you will learn how to approach Sentence Correction (SC) questions. Often students focus only on the grammar rules and miss the big picture behind the SC questions. This session will unravel the most optimum and effective approach for SC questions.

How will this Session Benefit You?
After attending this session you will get absolutely sure of the approach that you need to follow for SC questions. With clear understanding of why SC needs to be approached from a meaning standpoint and how understanding sentence structure leads to better comprehension of meaning and effective identification of errors, you will be all set to learn SC the right way.

How will You Learn??
We will first explain to you the basics behind the approach for SC. Then we will solve 4 progressively difficult questions by following the process. Each question will be covered in the session in the following manner:

1. Grammar decoupled from the process – Since this is the first session of SC, many of you may not be aware of all the grammar rules. So you can get the maximum from the session, we will first ask you carefully selected questions that cover the underlying grammar rule tested in the question. We will discuss the grammar concept briefly so you all are aware of the pertinent rule before you move on in the session.
2. Solving the question on your own – You will solve the question yourself.
3. Solving with the Expert – Then the expert will solve the question with you by following the e-GMAT 3 step process. At every step of the way, the expert will ask thought provoking questions to ensure that you are actively engaged in the session.

What should You do before the Session?
Since this is the first SC session of a live session batch, we invite students to come with a clean slate so that they understand the significance of a scientific approach to attempt SC. Hence, the primary requirement is that students come with an open mind. Secondly, we do require a basic understand of grammatical concepts listed below. All these concepts are covered in our Article: “Foundations of GMAT Grammar”.

Solving Sc Questions With Verb Errors

What will You Learn?
Use of the correct verb tense is not the matter of intuition but requires a clear knowledge of the context of the sentence. If you face difficulty in deciding when to use past perfect tense and when to use simple present tense, then this is the session for you. Learn to use the correct verb tenses so that the sentence conveys the intended logical meaning in the given context.

How will this Session Benefit You?
At the end of this session you will be able to

1. Gain a better understanding of overall verb tense usage
2. Decide when the use of past perfect tense is necessary and when optional.
3. Appreciate better why understanding the meaning of the sentence is necessary for determining the required verb tense.

How will you learn?
The session begins with ten mini warm-up questions designed to gauge your current level of understanding of the correct usage of various verb tenses, thereby filling any possible gaps in the same and getting you up to speed for the session. Then come four full length GMAT like questions, carefully created by the e-GMAT experts and focusing primarily on the correct usage of the more advanced tenses such as present perfect and past perfect tense.

What should You do before the Session?
To get the maximum out of this session, you need to ensure that before the session you have completed the prescribed pre-requisites for it. These pre-requisites include assigned course work that consists of all concept and application files till Verb Tenses, articles as per the study plan, and designated OG questions (to be solved using the e-GMAT 3- step process).

Parallelism

What will You Learn?
In this session you will learn how to use the process to solve questions that involves advanced parallelism concepts. You will see how by understanding the intended meaning the identification of lists becomes a cakewalk. You will see how the meaning helps you identify the lists that are not perfectly grammatical. In addition, you will learn the basics behind ellipsis as it pertains to comparisons in the sentence. Overall, you will see how the e-GMAT 3 step process simplifies otherwise complicated questions.

How will this Session Benefit You?
At the end of this session you will gain confidence in solving questions involving complicated lists. You will also be able to eliminate incorrect choices that appear to be grammatical parallel but are not correct. Overall your accuracy will improve.

How will you learn?
We will discuss 7 full length questions, most of them 700+ level. For each question, which will cover distinct parallelism concept, we will focus on how to identify errors in the original sentence by understanding the meaning and by leveraging sentence structure. We will also cover the basics of ellipsis in comparison through multiple simple examples.
You will first attempt each of the questions above on your own. Then we will demonstrate how to solve each question using the e-GMAT 3 step process.

What should You do before the Session?
To make the most out of this session, you must have completed the assigned course work that includes all concepts till Parallelism – Comparison (inclusive). You should have also read all the articles as prescribed in the study plan. Most importantly, after each application file, you should have solved the OG questions using the e-GMAT 3 step process.

Modifiers

What will You Learn?

In this session you will learn how to use the process to solve questions pertaining to modifiers. You will see how understanding the intended meaning helps with determining the role and usage of modifiers. You will solve questions pertaining to all sorts of modifiers – prepositional phrase modifiers, verb-ing modifiers, noun + noun modifiers. You will learn about scenarios in which one modifier works but the other does not. Overall, you will see how the e-GMAT 3 step process simplifies otherwise complicated questions.

How will this Session Benefit You?
At the end of this session you will gain confidence in solving questions involving complicated modifiers. You will also be able to eliminate incorrect choices that appear to be grammatical correct but change the intended meaning of the sentence. Overall your accuracy will improve.

How will you learn?
We will discuss 7 full length questions, most of them 700+ level. For each question, which will include distinct modifier, we will focus on how to identify errors in the original sentence by understanding the meaning and by leveraging sentence structure. You will first attempt each of the questions above on your own. Then we will demonstrate how to solve each question using the e-GMAT 3 step process.

What should You do before the Session?
To make the most out of this session, you must have completed all modifier related concepts. You should have also read all the articles as prescribed in the study plan. Most importantly, after each application file, you should have solved the OG questions using the e-GMAT 3 step process.

How and what to Infer

What will You Learn?
This session will help you build the two core skills required to ace inference questions:

1. Relating the different statements in the passage to form inferences
2. Attention to detail

How will this Session Benefit You?
HIGHER ACCURACY

You’ll see at least some instant improvement in your accuracy level in Inference questions after the session. Additionally, as you internalize the learnings from the session and apply them, your accuracy level will keep rising.

HIGHER CONFIDENCE

This session will arm you with the correct approach and relevant concepts to understand precisely why the wrong option is wrong and the correct choice is correct. With clarity in your mind, your confidence level will increase tremendously. After the session, you’ll not be satisfied with marking answers by hunch. In other words, for most inference questions, you will be able to pin point the correct answer and not be confused between 2 answer choices.

REDUCE TIME TO ANSWER

As your understanding of concepts and process improves and confidence increases, you’ll notice that you are taking lesser and lesser time to answer CR questions.

How will You Learn??
HIGHER ACCURACY

We will discuss 6 full length questions, most of them 700+ level. Each question is cherry picked on the basis of two criteria:

1. How the correct inference is derived from the given information
2. How the incorrect option statements are built to confuse students

The questions discussed in the session will cover both the categories of inference questions: “Must be True” and “Most Strongly Supported”. You will first attempt each of the questions above on your own. We’ll then discuss the question in details using our standard process for solving CR questions. Since our standard process involves prethinking, you’ll also learn to draw inferences from the passages without even looking at the option statements.
We’ll not only discuss the passage and the option statements but also explain how the correct inference is derived from the given information and how the question maker has specifically designed traps in incorrect option statements. Probably, your biggest learning will come from our latter explanations.
To make the session lively and participative, we’ll use lot of communication features including chat window, polls, Q&A pod, notes pane, presentation and annotations.

What should You do before the Session?
To make the most out of this session, you must have completed the assigned course work, as assigned in the study plan that includes Inference concept file.
Since this is the first session in the CR course, you are also required to go through the fundamental concepts in CR, which include Premise and Conclusion series of concepts and a concept on Logical Structure of arguments. In addition, you are required to go through the diagnostic test to assess your level of understanding before you begin the course.

Prethinking for Assumptions

What will You Learn?
PRETHINKING

This session will introduce you to one of the most revolutionary ideas to tackle CR questions: Prethinking. Since this idea was emphasized as a process two years ago by Rajat, founder of e-GMAT, prethinking has helped thousands of students ace CR. Since prethinking applies not only to assumption questions but to all argument-based questions, you’ll have learnt a much better approach to CR questions by the end of this session.

THREE CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSUMPTION

Since the session is primarily based on assumption questions, you’ll learn the three characteristics that any statement must satisfy to qualify as an assumption.

NEGATION TEST

You will also learn“Negation Test”, which is a sure-shot way to separate assumptions from non-assumptions.

How will this Session Benefit You?
HIGHER ACCURACY

You’ll see a jump in accuracy as soon as you start prethinking and as soon as you start applying the negation test. As you internalize the learnings from the session and apply them, your accuracy level will keep rising.

HIGHER CONFIDENCE

After the session, you’ll not be satisfied with marking answers by hunch. This session will arm you with the correct approach and relevant concepts to understand precisely why the wrong option is wrong and the correct choice is correct. With clarity in your mind, your confidence level will increase tremendously.

LOWER TIME TO ANSWER

As your understanding and confidence increases, you’ll notice that you are taking lesser and lesser time to answer CR questions. Most students who practice the post session exercises are able to reduce their time to answer CR questions to less than 1:45 seconds

LAY A SOLID FOUNDATION

Since the process of prethinking learned in this session applies to to all argument based questions such as assumption, strengthen weaken etc., which form more than 80% of CR questions, this session will lay a solid foundation for you to ace GMAT CR.

We will discuss 6-7 full length assumption questions, most of them 700+ level. Each question is cherry picked on the basis of two criteria:

1. Why exactly the given assumption is required for the argument to hold
2. How the incorrect option statements are built to confuse students

You will first attempt each of the questions above on your own and possibly fall into traps designed by the question makers.
We’ll then discuss the question in details using our standard process for solving CR questions. Since the standard process involves prethinking, we’ll also find out assumptions required even before looking at the option statements. For each question, we will prethink two or more assumptions. The focus will be on the approach (process) to prethink assumptions.
Lastly, we’ll not only discuss the argument and the option statements but also explain why the correct assumption is required for the argument to hold and how the question maker has specifically designed traps in incorrect option statements. Probably, your biggest learning will come from our latter explanations.
To make the session lively and participative, we’ll use lot of communication features including chat window, polls, Q&A pod, notes pane, presentation and annotations.
