The lessons are done, the practice questions went well, and you feel good about it.

Then you take a cementing quiz and get 6 out of 10.

So what does that mean? Was it a bad day? A tough set of questions? Or is the topic not quite yours yet?

That’s exactly the question cementing is built to answer. And we’ve rebuilt our cementing quizzes so that the answer is fairer, easier to read and, when you’re not there yet, comes with a plan for what to do next.

Here’s how the new cementing quizzes work, and why we built them this way.

Prefer to watch first? This short video walks you through everything in this post: how you’re judged, what happens after each quiz, and what you’ll see on your screen.

Where Cementing Fits in Your Prep

Every topic in your e-GMAT course follows the same path. First, you learn it. Then, you practice it. Then comes cementing – a set of quizzes that checks the skill has stuck.

Why a separate step? Because getting a question right once is not the same as getting it right on test day, weeks later, with the clock running. Cementing checks that you can do it again and again, not just once.

Each topic has two cementing modules: Medium Cementing first, then Hard Cementing. Before your first quiz, you go through the 4 cementing process files. (If you hit Start Quiz before reading them, we’ll nudge you toward the files first. We’ll never block you, though.)

10 Fixed Quizzes – and Quiz 1 Is Your Warm-Up

Each cementing module has 10 fixed quizzes, with 10 questions each. Every student gets the same quizzes, in the same order. So you know exactly what’s in front of you, and everyone is measured on the same questions.

Quiz 1 is your warm-up. Use it to get a feel for the quizzes. It doesn’t count toward your result, so a slow start costs you nothing.

(First-quiz nerves are real. We’d rather you get them out of the way on a quiz that doesn’t count.)

Your Last 2 Quizzes, Judged Together

This is the heart of the new design: we never judge you on one quiz alone.

From Quiz 3 onward, after every quiz, we add up your correct answers across your last 2 quizzes. That gives you a number out of 20, which we call your L20 – your last 20 questions. Your screen shows it as a percentage.

Say you get 6 right on Quiz 2 and 7 right on Quiz 3. Your L20 is 13 out of 20, or 65%.

Why two quizzes? Because one good quiz can be luck. We’ve all had that quiz where every guess seemed to land. Two good quizzes in a row tell a different story. They show the skill is really yours.

It works the other way too. One weak quiz (a bad night’s sleep, a noisy evening at home) is never judged on its own.

From cementing onward, L20 is the number to watch.

(In MSR and RC, a quiz has 9 questions – 3 sets of 3 – so your L20 is out of 18. Same idea, same name.)

Two Bars – One for Everyone, One Just for You

Every module has two bars to aim for.

The passing bar (Threshold) is the minimum every student should reach, so it’s the same for everyone. In Medium Cementing, it’s 14 out of 20 (70%). In other words, you can make up to 6 mistakes across your last 2 quizzes. In Hard Cementing, it’s 11 out of 20 (55%).

The mastery bar (Mastery target) is yours. It comes from the target score in your Personalized Study Plan (PSP), so a higher target score means a higher bar. With a 90% mastery bar in Medium, you can make up to 2 mistakes across your last 2 quizzes. Haven’t made your PSP yet? We use a starting bar (80% for Medium, 70% for Hard) until you do.

You’ll notice your screen talks in mistakes, not percentages. “2 mistakes or fewer” is something you can actually aim for when you sit down with 10 questions in front of you. “90%” is a lot harder to picture.

Good News Shows Up Right Away

The moment your last 2 quizzes reach a bar for the first time, we tell you. This can happen after any quiz. You never have to wait for good news.

Reach the passing bar and you’ll see “Threshold met”. We’ll then ask you: go for mastery, or finish here? (We recommend mastery. More on why in a bit.)

Reach the mastery bar and you’re done. We mark the module done for you. There’s nothing to press.

And here’s the part that makes going for mastery safe: once you reach a level, you keep it. Pass, then have a weaker quiz? You’re still passed. You’ve already shown the skill over 2 quizzes, and one off day later can’t take that away.

“Not Yet” Only Comes at a Check-in

Good news can come after any quiz. “Not yet” can’t.

We only say “not yet” at planned moments called check-ins. Your first check-in comes after Quiz 3. After that, a check-in comes 2 quizzes after your last choice. On the quiz in between, your screen simply shows your next target.

Why this way? Because a “not yet” should be fair. It’s always based on 2 fresh quizzes that you took after your last choice. An older quiz can help you pass, but it can never count against you.

It also means you aren’t being judged after every single quiz. Between check-ins, you get room to actually work on your mistakes.

The Loop – Your Plan When You’re Not There Yet

A check-in never just hands you a score. It gives you a plan. We call it the Loop, and it has 4 steps:

Locate – find your weak area by looking at your mistakes.

Overcome – fix them.

Own – make the fix your own, so you get it right next time too.

Prove – show it on your next cementing quiz.

The first 3 steps happen before your next quiz. The 4th step is your next quiz.

Each check-in also gives you a clear target for that quiz, counted in mistakes. Something like: “Quiz 7: 1 mistake or fewer.” That’s a lot easier to work toward than “do better next time”.

You Decide – and We’ll Tell You What We Recommend

You only make a choice at two moments: when you reach the passing bar, and at a check-in. Each time, there are just two options – keep going, or finish here. We’ll always tell you which one we recommend, and a “Help me decide” button explains both.

A few things worth knowing:

At your first check-in, there’s no finish button. We want you to try the Loop at least once before your result is set.

After you pass, you can always finish here. Your pass is safe, so finishing costs you nothing. We’ll still recommend going for mastery.

You never have to press a button to keep going. Just start your next quiz and we’ll take that as “keep going”.

Done is final. A finished module can’t be reopened. That’s why, when you reach Threshold, the smart move is to go for mastery. You can still take any leftover quizzes for practice after you’re done. They just won’t change your status.

With 10 quizzes and Quiz 1 as the warm-up, you get 8 chances (after Quiz 3 through Quiz 10) to reach a new level. If the quizzes run out, the module closes at the best level you reached.

Let’s See It in Action: Arjun’s Medium Cementing

Rules make more sense when you watch them play out. Meet Arjun. He used the Loop and passed on the very next quiz.

His pass showed up the moment it happened, right after Quiz 4. Then it stayed safe while he went for mastery, even when Quiz 7 came in a mark lower than Quiz 6.

And he reached mastery on Quiz 8, with 2 quizzes left over for practice.

Everything You Need, on One Screen

Your cementing screen pulls all of this together, so you never have to work out where you stand.

The level card shows your current L20 and how far you are from each bar. Light red means you’re below the passing bar, yellow means you’re between the two bars, and green means mastery.

The action box tells you what just happened, what to do next, and the exact target for your next quiz.

The Plan, Chart and Table views show your journey three ways: your quizzes in groups with the check-ins marked, a chart of your scores and your L20 over time, and a full table of every attempt with dates.

Those dates matter more than you’d think. If more than a day passes between two quizzes, your screen flags it. It’s a bit like net practice in cricket: three short sessions a week will do more for your batting than one long session the day before the match. A steady rhythm is what makes skills stick.

Medium First, Then Hard

Do Medium Cementing first, then Hard Cementing. Both work exactly the same way. Only the bars change.

That said, Hard is never locked. If you haven’t passed Medium yet, Hard shows a warning. But if you do well on Hard’s warm-up (6 out of 10 or more), that warning softens into a gentler note. And if you pass Hard, Medium is marked “Not needed”. If you’re ready to move ahead, we won’t hold you back.

3 Rules to Know Before Quiz 1

Only your first try counts. You can review a quiz or take it again, but a retake won’t change your L20. Your first try shows what you really know. A retake of the same questions mostly shows what you remember.

Finish each quiz in one sitting. If you step away from a quiz for more than 10 minutes in total, that quiz is lost. It won’t count, and you can’t take it again. That’s one quiz fewer for you, so pick a time when you won’t be interrupted.

When you pass, go for mastery. Done is final, and your pass is safe either way.

Ready to Make It Stick?

That’s the new cementing in a nutshell. You’re judged on 2 quizzes, never one. Good news shows up the moment it happens. “Not yet” comes only at a check-in, only on fresh quizzes, and always with a plan. And the mastery bar you’re chasing is set for your goal.

Open your Medium Cementing module, go through the 4 cementing process files, and start Quiz 1.

Good luck – and make it stick!

We’ve rebuilt e-GMAT’s cementing quizzes.
