Short answers and video responses are changing how applicants tell their stories. The task is to communicate clearly while preserving the details that make your experiences meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In this article:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#changing-formats\">How MBA application formats are changing<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#preserve-story\">Cut words without losing your story<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#revise\">Revise in stages<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#resources\">Explore 11 practical editing strategies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#about-mer\">About Poonam and myEssayReview<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"changing-formats\">How MBA application formats are changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the 2026\u201327 full-time MBA application cycle, <a href=\"https:\/\/mba.wharton.upenn.edu\/application-guide\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Wharton<\/a> asks for an immediate post-MBA goal in 50 words and medium- and long-term goals in 150 words. It also requires a separate 350-word essay about contributing to the Wharton community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobooth.edu\/mba\/full-time\/admissions\/how-to-apply\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Booth<\/a> requires responses to four short-answer prompts, each with a 300-character limit. Be careful to distinguish character limits from word limits when planning your responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellogg.northwestern.edu\/news\/blog\/2026\/06\/10\/full-time-mba-application-live\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Kellogg<\/a> now requires one written essay and five short video essays for its full-time MBA programs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darden.virginia.edu\/mba\/admissions\/faq\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Darden<\/a> has also introduced a video essay for this cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These examples show why applicants need to be deliberate about what they communicate in each part of the application. Check the instructions for your specific program and cycle before submitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"preserve-story\">How do you cut words without losing your story?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, I have worked with many applicants who had strong content but struggled to bring their essays within the required word limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When applicants are significantly over the limit, they often start cutting details simply to create space. Unfortunately, they sometimes remove the very details that bring their experiences to life and make their stories personal and compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeting a word or character limit is about identifying <strong>what is essential to your story<\/strong>, what can be expressed more concisely, and what does not need to be there at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My first advice is: <strong>Do not limit yourself while writing your first draft.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write down the details you need to tell your story effectively. Then organize and structure your content. Once the substance and structure are in place, begin trimming strategically to meet the required limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"revise\">Revise in stages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several ways to make your writing more concise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate repetition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove unnecessary background information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace wordy expressions with precise words.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tighten sentences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check whether each detail contributes something meaningful to your narrative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on your essay, some strategies will help more than others. Do not expect to reach the required word limit in one round of editing. With each revision, you may find another sentence to tighten, another repetition to remove, or another idea to express more simply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout this process, preserve the details that reveal <strong>who you are, what you did, why it mattered, and what you learned<\/strong>.
