    What are the errors in the original sentence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Deserts are inhabited with several distinct animal species, with each their<\/span> own method of adapting to long periods of moisture shortage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pronoun-Antecedent Number Error<\/span>:  The pronoun \u201ctheir\u201d refers to the antecedent \u201ceach\u201d.  Since \u201ceach\u201d is always singular, the pronoun \u201ctheir\u201d should be singular \u201cits\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Idiom Error<\/span>:  Correct idiomatic construction is \u201cinhabited by\u201d.  One can either memorize this construction or can deduce this from the following analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The clause \u201cdeserts are inhabited with several animal species\u201d is written in passive voice.  We can write the same sentence in active voice as \u201cseveral animal species inhabit deserts\u201d. Now let’s convert this passive again \u201cdeserts are inhabited by several animal species\u201d.  And hence the idiomatic construction \u2013 inhabited by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Modifier Error<\/span>:  comma + with modifier typically modifies the preceding clause.  In this case, this modification is non-sensical.  Ideally, the modifier should begin with \u201ceach\u201d.  This modifier will act as a noun modifier modifying the distinct animal species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An alternate way to approach this error is that modifier \u201cwith\u201d is misplaced.  \u201cWith\u201d is a preposition, connecting two items in a sentence, establishing a relationship between them.  From the intended meaning of the sentence, it is clear that \u201cwith\u201d should connect \u201ceach\u201d with \u201ctheir own\u201d.  Thus, it should be placed between \u201ceach\u201d and \u201ctheir\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Answer Choice Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Choice B: Deserts are inhabited with distinctly several animal species, each with its<\/span> own method of adapting to long periods of moisture shortage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Idiom Error<\/span> pertaining to use of inhabited with:  Similar to Choice A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Modifier Error<\/span>:  It does not make sense for distinct to modify several.  As in the original sentence, distinct should modify animal species and hence should be used as an adjective and not as an adverb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Choice C: Deserts are inhabited by several distinct animal species, each with its<\/span> own method of adapting to long periods of moisture shortage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No Errors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Choice D: Deserts are inhabited by several distinct animal species, having each its<\/span> own method of adapting to long periods of moisture shortage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Modifier Error<\/span>:  The verb-ing modifier \u201chaving each its\u2026\u201d appears to modify the preceding clause since it is separated by comma.  This modification is illogical.  Per the intended meaning, it should modify the noun \u2013 animal species since it presents a characteristic of these species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Choice E: Deserts are inhabited by several distinct animal species, that each has their<\/span> own method of adapting to long periods of moisture shortage.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Subject- Verb Number Error<\/span>:  The subject \u2013 that refers to plural animal species.  Thus, the verb should also be plural \u2013 have.  Note that in this construction since \u201ceach\u201d appears after the subject, it has no impact on the number of the verb.  This is explained in detail in e-GMAT advanced concept \u2013 SV \u2013 Words that do not change number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thus, Choice C is the correct answer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
