What are the errors in the original sentence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sentence does not use correct expression.  The idiom <\/span>\u2013 so that \u2013 is used to denote purpose.  For example,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom cooked dinner so that Mary could get some rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the context of this sentence, the usage of \u201cso that\u201d is non-sensical.  It illogically implies that July decrease in unemployment happened with a purpose of being lowest in 2 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer Choice Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Choice B:  According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment so that it was the lowest two-year rate suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.<\/address>\n\n\n\n

Idiom Error<\/span> pertaining to use of \u201cso that\u201d:  Similar to Choice A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meaning Error:<\/span> The use of expression \u201ctwo-year\u201d distorts the intended meaning of the sentence.  Per the intended meaning, in July, the unemployment reached its lowest level in the last 2 years.  Per this choice, unemployment reached a lowest rate.  But it is not clear that \u201clowest\u201d with regards to what.  Instead \u201ctwo-year\u201d now modifies \u201crate\u201d, illogically implying that this is a type of rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice C:  According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment to what would be the lowest in two years suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.<\/address>\n\n\n\n

Verb Tense Error<\/span>:  By using the verb tense \u201cwould\u201d, the sentence now casts doubt in the otherwise factual information.  The July decrease is indeed the lowest in 2 years.  There is no question about that.  However, use of \u201cwould\u201d casts an air of uncertainty around this fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice D:  According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment to a two-year low level suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.<\/address>\n\n\n\n

Meaning error<\/span>:  Similar to Choice B<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice E:  According to some economists, the July decrease in unemployment to the lowest level in two years suggests that the gradual improvement in the job market is continuing.<\/address>\n\n\n\n

No errors. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, Choice E is the correct answer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
