What does this sentence mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This sentence explains the announcement made by the loan company.  The company will start lending money to a certain type of borrowers.  These borrowers have proven records of not paying back their loans on time.  Such lending is part of a group collectively known as the subprime lending market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the errors in the original sentence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The loan company announced it would soon lend money to borrowers with proven records of their not paying back their loans on time, collectively known as the subprime lending market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sentence has 2 errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pronoun Usage<\/span>:  The pronoun \u201ctheir\u201d refers to \u201cborrowers\u201d.  The pronoun or antecedent is not required at this location.  Let’s see the sentence with the antecedent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loan company will soon lend money to borrowers with proven records of borrowers\u2019 not paying back their loans on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expression \u201cborrower\u2019s not paying back\u201d is incorrect. This should be corrected by simply deleting this occurrence of \u201ctheir\u201d.  The sentence will make complete sense if it states \u2013 with proven records of not paying their loans\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modifier Error<\/span>:  The modifier \u2013 collectively known as \u2013 is a verb-ed modifier.  This modifier appears to modify the preceding noun \u2013 time.  But this modification is non-sensical since \u201ctime is not known as subprime lending market”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be corrected by changing the nature of modifier. \u00a0Note that the modifier is worded such that it adds to the idea of the preceding clause. \u00a0This clause talks about an action that is then named in this modifier. \u00a0\u2013 subprime lending market. \u00a0Thus, the modifier should be reworded as the modifier than can modify the preceding clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice C<\/span>:  Modifier error<\/span>:  It is not clear what the modifier \u201cwith such a group\u201d modifies.  In other words, it is not clear \u201cwho\u201d or \u201cwhat\u201d is \u201cwith such a group\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice D<\/span>:  This choice has two errors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modifier Error<\/span> as in choice A<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Idiom Error:<\/span> \u201crecords that they do not\u2026\u201d is not idiomatic construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice E<\/span>:  This choice has two errors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Idiom error<\/span> as in choice D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wordy & Ambiguous<\/span>:  It is not clear what \u201csuch\u201d refers to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, Choice B is the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the key take-away messages?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Verb-ed modifiers can only modify preceding noun.<\/li>
  2. If the intended meaning requires extending the thought presented in preceding clause, then modifier of the form \u201cnoun + noun modifier\u201d can be used.<\/li>
