What does this question test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This question tests your ability to identify and remove redundant expressions in a sentence.  It uses conditional verb construction “if present tense, then simple future tense”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does the sentence mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This sentence states a conditional statement using \u201cif-then\u201d construction.  If certain expenditures are reduced even further, then reports will diminish in number and quality.  This has happened in the past as well, that is why it is safe to say that the reports will continue to diminish in number and quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the errors in the original sentence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This choice has 2 errors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:  Conditional Verb Tense Error<\/span> \u2013 First of all the verb \u201chave been to diminish\u201d is incorrect.  Secondly in this if..then construction, use of \u201chave been diminished\u201d is incorrect.  Only simple present and simple future tense are allowed in this construction in the \u201cthen\u201d clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2:  Redundancy Error<\/span> \u2013 The use of \u201chave been diminished\u201d is redundant since the word \u201ccontinue\u201d expresses this meaning effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer Choice Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Choice B<\/span> \u2013 This choice has similar error as in choice A.  The only difference is that the verb here is have diminished instead of have been diminished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice C<\/span> \u2013 Redundancy error as in choice A.  The expression \u201cas they already did\u201d is redundant, since \u201ccontinue\u201d expresses the intended continued diminishing of the quality of reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice D<\/span> \u2013 Same error as in Choice C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice E<\/span> \u2013 No errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, Choice E is the correct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
