In this case, the student is often confused as to how to select the correct answer choice. So if these modifiers are placed at different locations in the sentence, the meaning of the sentence changes.&nbsp; This is how GMAC may introduce such meaning based errors.&nbsp; In these cases, both the placements result in logical meaning but only one is correct and that is determined by what the intended meaning of the sentence is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a simple example below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<h3>Simple example<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"962\" height=\"123\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-CAT-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3604\" title=\"The-CAT-1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-CAT-1.jpg 962w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-CAT-1-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here is the scene that I picture.&nbsp; The rat has black stripes. So per this sentence, I no longer have any information about the stripes on the cat. But I have information about the stripes on the rat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So simply by placing \u201cwith black stripes\u201d differently, the meaning communicated by the sentence changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is exactly how GMAT may introduce a difference in meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<h3 id=\"og1\">Official Question 1 \u2013 Verbal Review 2 \u2013 Q#37<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s take an official question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some buildings that were destroyed and heavily damaged in the earthquake last year were constructed in violation of the city&#8217;s building code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Some buildings that were destroyed and heavily damaged in the earthquake last year were<\/li><li>Some buildings that were destroyed or heavily damaged in the earthquake last year had been<\/li><li>Some buildings that the earthquake destroyed and heavily damaged last year have been<\/li><li>Last year the earthquake destroyed or heavily damaged some buildings that have been<\/li><li>Last year some of the buildings that were destroyed or heavily damaged in the earthquake had been<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Intended meaning from Choice A<\/strong>: The intended meaning of the sentence from choice A can be inferred as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Some buildings had been destroyed in the earthquake last year.<\/li><li>(Prior to the destruction) These buildings were constructed in violation of the city&#8217;s building code<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"888\" height=\"123\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3606\" title=\"Some-buildings-1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-1.jpg 888w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-1-300x41.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 888px) 100vw, 888px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that this sentence has two verbs and based on where \u201clast year\u201d is placed, it can modify either of the two verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that choice A is incorrect since it uses the simple past \u2013 were constructed. The correct verb should be \u201chad been constructed\u201d to illustrate correct sequencing with respect to \u201cwere destroyed\u201d to show that the buildings were constructed prior to the destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct: <\/strong>Choice B corrects this error and is the correct choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grammatically Correct but Incorrect<\/strong> <strong>choice (E)<\/strong> \u2013 Notice how in choice E the test takers have cleverly moved \u201clast year\u201d in the clause that with SV pair &#8211; \u201csome of the buildings had been constructed\u201d such that it now describes when some of these buildings were constructed.&nbsp; It no longer describes the timing of the earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1003\" height=\"139\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3607\" title=\"Some-buildings-2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-2.jpg 1003w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Some-buildings-2-300x41.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intended meaning communicated by Choice E is the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Some of the buildings had been constructed in violation of city\u2019s building code last year.<\/li><li>These buildings were destroyed in the earthquake.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that in choice E, we now know that the buildings were constructed last year.&nbsp; This is the information that we did not have in choice A.&nbsp; Thus, the meaning communicated by this choice is certainly different from the meaning communicated by choice A.&nbsp; Hence, while choice E is grammatically correct, it changes the logical intended meaning and is not the correct choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>PS: Access our free concepts on sentence structure if you want to know how to break a compound sentence into simple sentences. Heartless human beings are like wild animals.&nbsp; These wild animals rip their own kin when the need arises and they do not even feel any sign of remorse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-find-the-errors-in-the-original-sentence\">Find the Errors in the Original Sentence<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Heartless human beings are like wild animals,<\/li><li>which will rip its own kin at the slightest of need and that too without a sign of remorse.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence structure of the sentence is as shown above.&nbsp; The two SV pairs agree in number and logically make sense.&nbsp; The simple present tense \u201care\u201d is appropriate as this sentence states a fact that is true in the present context.&nbsp; However, use of future tense \u201cwill rip\u201d appears incorrect.&nbsp;&nbsp; This is a general fact about the wild animals and hence should be stated in simple present tense.&nbsp; Furthermore, \u201cits\u201d pronoun refers to wild animals but it does not agree in number.&nbsp; It should be \u201ctheir\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-review-answer-choices-to-do-poe\">Review Answer Choices to do POE<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice B \u2013 use of past tense \u201cwere\u201d implies that heartless humans beings are no longer like wild animals.&nbsp; This distorts the intended meaning.&nbsp; Furthermore, \u201chave ripped\u201d is incorrect since it now no longer communicates a general fact about wild animals.&nbsp; It states as if the action of \u201chave ripped\u201d is a one-time action that has been completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice C \u2013 This choice changes the intended meaning of the sentence.&nbsp; It now implies that \u201chuman beings\u201d in general are like \u201cheartless wild animals\u201d.&nbsp; Note that the original sentence implied that \u201cheartless human beings\u201d are like \u201cwild animals\u201d.&nbsp; Thus, by changing the placement of the modifier \u201cheartless\u201d, the meaning of the sentence has changed.&nbsp; Note that this sentence is otherwise grammatically sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice D \u2013 This choice changes the intended meaning of the sentence as choice C does.&nbsp;
