Lights are visible articles, and the water heater is an out-of-sight appliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"3-31-a-sidenote-for-my-friends-in-india-\"><span style=\"color:#053e60\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3.1 A Sidenote for my friends in India &nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My friends in India must be wondering how a water heater is an example of an unobtrusive or non-conspicuous electric appliance? We see it in our bathrooms and turn it on and off as required. While a water heater in India is actually a visible appliance, in the US, it is not. The central water heating system that is humongous in size is generally located in every house&#8217;s garage or basement. Therefore, it stays out of sight and has been cited as an example of unobtrusive equipment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"4-4-grammarly-gap-in-choice-e-the-most-loved-incorrect-answer-choice\">4. Grammarly Gap in Choice E, The Most Loved Incorrect Answer Choice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice E reads: <em>visible equipment, such as lights, that must be turned on and off and underestimate <span style=\"color:red\">it when<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice E most certainly looks very promising. It uses the succinct structure \u201c<em>visible equipment<\/em>\u201d instead of \u201c<em>equipment\u2026 that are visible<\/em>.\u201d This structure is identical to the expression \u201c<em>unobtrusive equipment<\/em>\u201d in the non-underlined portion. But the following are the flaws that plague this choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The Pronoun Demon<\/em><\/strong>: The pronoun \u201c<em>it<\/em>\u201d poses a big problem here. In my colleague Stacey\u2019s words, we have a pronoun demon destroying the meaning of the sentence. Since a pronoun is used as a replacement for a specific noun used in the sentence, the pronoun \u201c<em>it<\/em>\u201d actually refers to \u201c<em>the amount of energy used by visible equipment<\/em>\u201d because this is the only kind of energy the sentence has mentioned so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/gmat-pronoun-sc-question-overestimating-energy-1024x576.png\" alt=\"GMAT Pronoun - Overestimating energy\" class=\"wp-image-35524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/gmat-pronoun-sc-question-overestimating-energy-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/gmat-pronoun-sc-question-overestimating-energy-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/gmat-pronoun-sc-question-overestimating-energy-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/gmat-pronoun-sc-question-overestimating-energy.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If we plug this noun entity into the sentence, the sentence becomes completely illogical. So, we need to stay away from this pronoun demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The whimsical \u201c<em>when<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>: The word \u201c<em>when<\/em>\u201d is used very literally in GMAT SC problems. In this choice, the use of \u201c<em>when<\/em>\u201d suggests that people underestimate the amount of energy used by unobtrusive appliances only WHEN they consume energy. This meaning is certainly not intended. The sentence just presents general information that people underestimate the amount of energy used by such appliances. So, the use of \u201c<em>when<\/em>\u201d just does not work in this choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"5-5-d-for-done-deal\">5. D for Done Deal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choice D seals the deal by giving us the correct answer for this question. I say so because of the following reasons::<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>The two structures \u2014 \u201c<em>overestimate the amount of energy used by visible equipment<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>underestimate that used by unobtrusive equipment<\/em>\u201d \u2014 are perfectly parallel.<\/li><li>This choice also has a pronoun, but it is NOT demoniac. It is our angelic pronoun \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d correctly refers to the phrase \u201c<em>the amount of energy<\/em>\u201d. If you are wondering why just this part and not the whole thing as we saw in Choice E? The reason is simple. The phrase \u201cused by unobtrusive equipment\u201d is explicitly mentioned right after \u201c<em>that<\/em>.\u201d This pronoun \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d only lends logic to the sentence when connected with some other phrase. So, \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d is pretty dependent on some other phrase to provide logical meaning. But \u201c<em>it<\/em>\u201d is an independent pronoun and refers to the exact noun mentioned in the sentence.<\/li><li>The word \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d correctly refers to the noun \u201c<em>visible equipment<\/em>\u201d as all such appliances are turned on and off. So, \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d does NOT refer to the closest noun \u201c<em>lights<\/em>\u201d because the modification is not logical.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when we understand the meaning properly, we can solve this question without any hiccups. The perfect marriage of logic and grammar makes this sentence rich in learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"6-6-bird%E2%80%99s-eye-view\">6. If you identify the culprits, arriving at the correct answer choice is actually simple. The first two answer choices suffer from the SV number agreement errors. The noun \u201c<em>equipment<\/em>\u201d is a collective noun and hence, takes the singular verb. Therefore, the use of the plural verb \u201c<em>are<\/em>\u201d for the subject \u201c<em>that<\/em>\u201d when that refers to \u201c<em>equipment<\/em>\u201d is incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"7-7-practice-question\">7.
