What are the errors in the original sentence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Kwakiutl recognized one social unit larger than the tribe\u2014the confederacy, which was a cluster of loosely knit, informally related neighboring tribes who interacted with themselves more often than between other tribes. This sentence states a comparison in the \u201cwho clause\u201d.  Since it is a comparison, the elements being compared must be parallel.  The elements are as shown below:\u2026tribes who interacted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. With themselves<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MORE OFTEN THAN<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Between other tribes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strictly from parallelism standpoint, this sentence is correct.  But element 2 has idiom error<\/span>.  The word \u201cinteract\u201d is used only with the preposition \u201cwith\u201d.  Thus the correct idiom is – \u201cinteract with\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incorrect idioms with interact are \u201cinteract among\u201d, \u201cinteract between\u201d.  Note that the word \u201cinteraction\u201d can be used with different prepositions \u2013 with, of, between, among.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice D: <\/span><\/strong> This choice has two errors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:  Modifier error<\/span>:  The verb-ing modifier \u2013 interacting among\u2026- modifies the preceding clause.  Thus, it modifies \u201cwhich was a cluster of \u2026\u201d. Since \u201cwhich\u201d refers to \u201cconfederacy, the verb-ing modifier really modifies \u201cconfederacy was a cluster of\u2026\u201d.   This is not the intended meaning of the sentence.  Per the original sentence, the \u201ctribes interacted with\u2026\u201d and not the confederacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2:  Idiom error<\/span><\/span> as in Choice A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice E <\/span><\/strong>= This choice has similar errors as Choice D<\/p>\n\n\n\n
