The logical inference here is that the slime would expand several hundred times as it absorbs seawater and form a slime ball. Finally, we are presented with information about what this slime ball does. The slime ball is used as a defense mechanism against predatory fish, coating their gills, suffocating them, or distressing them enough that they will flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"5-13-error-analysis\">1.3 Error Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pronoun Error leading to Meaning Error<\/strong>: The two uses of the pronoun \u201c<em>it<\/em>\u201d create ambiguity and confuse the meaning of the sentence.&nbsp; The first use of the pronoun <em>\u201cit\u201d<\/em> clearly refers to the subject <em>\u201chagfish\u201d <\/em>and is logically and grammatically correct. However, the second and third uses of the pronoun <em>\u201cit\u201d <\/em>create confusion. As discussed in the Meaning Analysis. It is unclear if these pronouns refer to the <em>\u201chagfish\u201d<\/em> expanding several hundred times and absorbing seawater or the <em>\u201cslime<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp; Now, subject pronouns tend to refer to the subject of the sentence, so grammatically, <em>\u201cit\u201d<\/em> should refer to the subject <em>\u201chagfish.\u201d <\/em>&nbsp;This pronoun-antecedent relationship creates illogical meaning, as discussed above in the Meaning Analysis. <em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"6-14-answer-choice-analysis-\">1.4 Answer Choice Analysis &nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"7-choice-a-although-when-a-hagfish-is-threatened-it-will-secrete-slime-that-is-small-in-quantity\">Choice A: Although when a hagfish is threatened, it will secrete slime that is small in quantity,<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:red\">Incorrect<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This choice has a Pronoun Error discussed in the Error Analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"8-choice-b-although-a-small-quantity-of-slime-is-secreted-by-the-hagfish-when-threatened\">Choice B: Although a small quantity of slime is secreted by the hagfish, when threatened<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:red\">Incorrect<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Modifier Error leading to Meaning Error<\/strong>: The modifier \u201c<em>when threatened<\/em>\u201d modifies the action of expanding several hundred times. So, this modifier associates with the subject pronoun \u201c<em>it<\/em>\u201d that grammatically refers to the subject noun \u201c<em>a small quantity of slime<\/em>.\u201d But this modification is illogical as it suggests that a small quantity of slime expands when threatened.
