The usage of this modifier often creates confusion because the function of a verb-ing modifier changes with the change in its placement in a sentence. This article is aimed at simplifying the usage of this \u201cdreaded\u201d modifier and helping you understand the functionality of this modifier better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before that, we have a small warm-up exercise. Essentially, these modifiers modify a particular entity in the sentence. The modification depends upon the placement of the modifier in the sentence, i.e., where and how they appear in the sentence. Since these modifiers are made from verbs, they denote action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mary cooked delicious food <strong>using<\/strong> fresh condiments.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The verb-ing modifier \u201cusing fresh condiments\u201d denotes an action in this sentence.&nbsp; It communicates the meaning &#8211; Mary used fresh condiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 id=\"5-placement-of-verb-ing-modifiers\">Placement of Verb-ing Modifiers<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The function played by a verb-ing modifier depends upon where and how it appears in the sentence.&nbsp; The verb-ing modifiers can take three places in a sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"ub_styled_list \" id=\"ub_styled_list-07c6825a-1410-4fd2-843b-6872352bcc71\"><ul class=\"fa-ul\"><li>Placed after a clause and PRECEDED by a comma,<\/li><li>Placed after a noun and NOT PRECEDED by a comma,<\/li><li>Placed at the beginning of a clause followed by a comma.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, the function of the verb-ing modifier changes with the change in its placement regarding the three structures mentioned above. It  <strong>either presents generic information about the preceding clause<\/strong>, <strong>or presents the result of the preceding clause.<\/strong><\/p><p>The verb-ing modifier can be placed after a clause and separated from the preceding clause by a comma.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"7-presenting-generic-information\">Presenting Generic Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"8-simple-examples-presenting-generic-information\">SIMPLE EXAMPLES: Presenting Generic Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Mary made a beautiful bouquet, arranging rare exotic flowers in certain symmetry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence means that Mary made a beautiful bouquet. And <strong>how<\/strong> did she do it? This question is answered by the verb-ing modifier \u201carranging rare exotic flowers in certain symmetry\u201d. &nbsp;i.e. Mary made a beautiful bouquet <strong>BY ARRANGING<\/strong> rare exotic flowers in certain symmetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sentence, verb-ing modifier is preceded by a comma. This means that this modifier modifies the preceding clause. In this sentence, the verb-ing modifier is presenting generic information about the preceding clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"9-gmat-like-sentence-presenting-generic-information\">GMAT-like SENTENCE: Presenting Generic Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>For decades now, Illinois Natural History Survey biologists in aluminum skiffs have scooted up and down the thinly wooded banks of the Illinois river and monitored local fish, catching, recording, and releasing approximately 150,000 of them a year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence means that for a very long time now, the INHS biologists have gone to the banks of the Illinois river in aluminum skiffs and have monitored local fish. And <strong>how they have monitored<\/strong> local fish? They have done so <strong>by<\/strong> catching, recording, and releasing some 150,000 fish a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sentence, all three verb-ing modifiers (parallel entities) appear in the sentence after the clause preceded by comma. Hence, they modify the entire preceding clause. Per the context of this sentence, we know that the three verb-ing modifiers are presenting generic information about the preceding clause. The three modifiers explain how the biologist did the job of monitoring local fish. They monitored local fish by catching them, putting them in records, and releasing them back in the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"10-presenting-result\">Presenting result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"11-simple-examples-presenting-the-result\">SIMPLE EXAMPLES: Presenting the result<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s look at this one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Mary made a beautiful bouquet, winning accolades from every one.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence tells us that Mary made a beautiful bouquet.&nbsp;&nbsp; It further explains that this action resulted in Mary winning a lot of accolades from every one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sentence, the verb-ing modifier appears after the clause preceded by a comma. This means the modifier will modify the entire preceding clause. In this sentence &#8220;winning accolades from every one&#8221; is presenting the result of the preceding clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"12-gmat-like-sentence-presenting-the-result\">GMAT like SENTENCE: Presenting the result<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us bring our \u201cwarm-up exercise\u201d question #1 here. Let us solve that GMAT like question to see why the correct answer is correct and how this rule set is applicable in that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"13-q1-why-the-correct-answer-is-correct\">Q#1 &#8211; Why the correct answer is correct<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>Students have been throwing away healthy meals made available in school cafeteria by The Los Angeles Unified School District and bringing their own junk food to school and these forced the district to bring back some of the foods it worked so hard to replace.<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We will apply the e-GMAT three-step process to solve this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"14-step-1-meaning-analysis\">STEP 1: MEANING ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence says that Los Angeles Unified School District added healthy meals to the school cafeteria.&nbsp; But students have been throwing away these healthy meals and have been bringing their own junk food. As a result of these actions, the district was forced to bring back some of the foods it worked so hard to replace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"15-step-2-error-analysis\">STEP 2: ERROR ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s now split the sentence into clauses to spot the errors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Students have been throwing away healthy meals made available in school cafeteria by The Los Angeles Unified School District and bringing their own junk food to school<\/li><li>and these forced the district to bring back some of the foods<ul><li>it worked so hard to replace.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second clause, pronoun \u201cthese\u201d have been used to refer the actions of \u201cthrowing healthy meals\u201d and \u201cbringing junk food\u201d. This usage is not correct because \u201cthese\u201d is a pronoun. It can only refer to a noun or another pronoun. It cannot be used to refer to an action or a clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"16-step-3-poe\">STEP 3: POE<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>school and these forced: Incorrect for the reason discussed during error analysis.<\/li><li>schools, which forced: Incorrect. Notice that \u201cwhich\u201d is a noun modifier that refers to the preceding noun or noun phrase. In this choice, \u201cwhich\u201d is referring to \u201cschools\u201d. This is illogical. Also notice that \u201cwhich\u201d is a relative pronoun that abides by the same rules for pronoun. Hence, \u201cwhich\u201d cannot be used to present the result of the preceding clause.<\/li><li>Schools, forcing: Correct. The verb-ing modifier \u201cforcing\u201d appears in this sentence preceded by a comma. This means that \u201cforcing\u201d is modifying the preceding clause. Per the context of the sentence, comma + forcing, in this choice, is correctly presenting the result of the preceding clause.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"17-applying-rule-set-1-on-official-question\">Applying RULE SET #1 On Official Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"18-og-12-47\">OG 12 #47<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><em>bringing<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>and brings<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>and it brings<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>and it brought<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>and brought<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We will solve this question, using e-gmat three-step process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"19-step-1-meaning-analysis\">STEP 1: MEANING ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence says that this summer, five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland. This action brought to 34 the total number of wild birds that have been successfully raised since transplants from Norway started in 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"20-step-2-error-analysis\">STEP 2: ERROR ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us split the sentence into clauses to spot the errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised<ul><li>since transplants from Norway began in 1975.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The only word underlined in this sentence is the verb-ing modifier \u201cbringing\u201d. This modifier appears after the main clause preceded by a comma. This means it modifies the preceding clause. The use of this modifier is correct here because per the context, it presents the result of the preceding clause &#8211; one of the functions of the verb-ing when preceded by a comma. Hence, there is no error in this sentence. This sentence is correct as is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"21-step-3-poe\">STEP 3: POE<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this step we will find out why the other answer choices are incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>bringing: Correct as explained during error analysis.<\/li><li>and brings: Incorrect. \u201cbrings\u201d is not the correct verb tense to refer to an action that took place in the past.&nbsp; Furthermore, use of \u2018comma + and\u2019 to connect two entities in a list \u2013 here two verbs of the same subject &#8211; is not correct.<\/li><li>and it brings: Incorrect.<ol><li>Singular pronoun \u201cit\u201d neither can refer to plural \u201ceagles\u201d nor can refer to the preceding clause. A pronoun can only refer to a noun or another pronoun.<\/li><li>Repeats the same verb tense error as in Choice B.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>and it brought: Incorrect. Repeats the same pronoun error as in Choice D.<\/li><li>and brought: Incorrect. Use of \u2018comma + and\u2019 to connect two entities in a list \u2013 here two verbs of the same subject &#8211; is not correct.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"22-a-point-to-remember\">A point to remember<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier, verb-ing modifiers are made from \u201cverbs\u201d and they denote action. Now, any action needs a doer. In the same way, the verb-ing modifiers also associate with the subjects of the preceding clause. What we must keep in mind is that the action denoted by verb-ing must make sense with the subject of the clause. The use of verb-ing is correct only if it makes sense with the subject of the clause it is modifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Sachin Tendulkar played an exceptionally outstanding innings, making the team win gloriously.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence means that Sachin played a superbly good innings. And the result of this action led to the victory of the team in a glorious manner. So, the verb-ing modifier \u201cmaking\u201d preceded by a comma is presenting the result of the preceding clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, \u201cmaking\u201d is an action that needs a subject. This event led to increase in his salary. Now, the subject of the sentence is \u201cJoe\u201d. However, he is not the doer of the verb \u201cbecame\u201d. He did not make himself the CFO of the company. Now look at the verb-ing modifier \u201cincreasing\u201d. Since verb-ing modifier denotes an action and hence associates with a verb, \u201cincreasing\u201d associates with \u201cJoe\u201d. The sentence thus means that Joe became the CFO of the company and as a result he increased his salary. We know that this is not even a possibility. This example is from the exercise of the previous article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>In three months, biologist Glauco Machado gathered enough information about large numbers of a relatively unstudied order of&nbsp;arachnids to persuade an ant specialist at the university to advise him,&nbsp;and to publish&nbsp;his first scientific paper.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><em>arachnids to persuade an ant specialist at the university to advise him and to publish<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>arachnids, persuading an ant specialist at the university to advise him and publishing<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>arachnids persuading an ant specialist at the university to advise him and publishing<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s use the tools to determine whether verb-ing modifier makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"30-step-1-intended-meaning-analysis\">STEP 1: (Intended) MEANING ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence says that in three months Machado gathered enough information about a huge number of comparatively unstudied order of arachnids. He gathered all information with two purposes in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>he wanted to persuade an ant specialist at the university to advise him<\/li><li>he wanted to publish his first scientific paper<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"31-step-2-error-analysis\">STEP 2: ERROR ANALYSIS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In three months, biologist Glauco Machado had enough information about large numbers of a relatively unstudied order of&nbsp;arachnids to persuade an ant specialist at the university to&nbsp;advise him, and to publish&nbsp;his first scientific paper.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence has just one subject-verb pair, meaning it has only one clause. The SV pair is accounted for. The purposes of gathering all the information have been correctly written in \u201cto verb\u201d form. These two purposes are also correctly joined with \u201cand\u201d. Hence, there is no error in this sentence. The sentence is correct as is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"32-step-3-poe\">STEP 3: POE<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us now do the POE to see what makes the other two choices incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>arachnids to persuade an ant specialist at the university to advise him, and to publish: Correct as we discussed during error analysis.<\/li><li>arachnids, persuading an ant specialist at the university to advise him and publishing: Incorrect. Here both the verb-ing modifiers are preceded by comma, implying that they modify the entire preceding clause. Hence, now the sentence means that Machado gathered all the information and this action resulted into two things:<ol><li>he persuaded the ant specialist, and<\/li><li>he published his first scientific papers.This is certainly not the intended meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence talks about purpose. Per this choice, Machado\u2019s gathering information actually led to the persuasion of the ant specialist and the publication of the first scientific paper. Hence, this choice is grammatically correct but certainly alters the intended meaning and is thus incorrect.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>arachnids persuading an ant specialist at the university to advise him and publishing:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorrect. In this choice, the verb-ing modifiers appear without comma. Here, both \u201cpersuading\u201d and \u201cpublishing\u201d modify the preceding noun \u201carachnids\u201d.&nbsp; Now, per this choice, the sentence means that Machado collected information on certain arachnids and these arachnids did the jobs of persuading the ant specialist and publishing first scientific paper. This is&nbsp;<strong>absolutely illogical<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>This is a case where verb-ing modifier without a comma does not make sense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"33-applying-the-rule-set-to-gmatprep-question\">APPLYING THE RULE SET TO GMATPREP QUESTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, so now that we understand how to use the new tools that we have learnt, lets add them to our arsenal and use the&nbsp;<strong>e-GMAT 3 step process<\/strong>&nbsp;to solve a GMAT PREP question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><em><strong>most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>most of them as large or larger than Jupiter and circling<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circle<\/strong><\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>mostly as large or larger than Jupiter, circling<\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us now apply the e-gmat three-step process to solve this one. We will begin with the first step that is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"34-meaning-analysis\">MEANING ANALYSIS:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence says that in the past few years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets. These massive planets are either as large as Jupiter or larger than Jupiter. These massive planets also circle other stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"35-error-analysis\">ERROR ANALYSIS:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This sentence uses a mix of two idioms \u2013 \u201cas X as\u201d and \u201cX larger than\u201d \u2013 in the form of \u201cas large or larger than\u201d. This is incorrect. We must use the idiom correctly in its entirety to present the correct comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the modifier \u2013 \u201cwhich circle\u2026\u201d.&nbsp; This relative pronoun modifier modifies the noun \u201c80 massive planets\u201d.&nbsp; Some of you may wonder that \u201cwhich circle\u2026\u201d modifies the closest noun \u201cJupiter\u201d.&nbsp; This is not correct.&nbsp; And this is where logical meaning and understanding the sentence structure comes to our aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that \u201cmost of them as large or larger than Jupiter\u201d is a modifier that provides additional information about the 80 massive planets.&nbsp; This modifier is encapsulated in a comma pair.&nbsp; So even if we remove this modifier from the sentence, the meaning will not be altered.&nbsp;&nbsp; So for the sake of our discussion, let\u2019s remove this modifier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of&nbsp;them&nbsp;as large or larger than Jupiter,&nbsp;which circle other stars.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now as you can see, \u201cwhich circle\u2026\u201d modifies the noun phrase \u201c80 massive planets\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp; Now this modifier is not written in correct construction since which is typically preceded by a comma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that the comma that precedes \u201cwhich\u201d does not separate \u201cwhich\u201d but is part of the comma pair that separates the modifier \u2013 most of them\u2026from the rest of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will now find the correct choice from the remaining 4 choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"36-poe\">POE:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle: Incorrect for reasons discussed above.<\/li><li>most of them as large or larger than Jupiter and circling: Incorrect.<ol><li>This choice repeats the idiom and parallelism errors of choice A.<\/li><li>A modifier is not separated from the entity it modifies by using \u201cand\u201d.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling: Correct. This choice corrects the error of choice A by using the correct idiom \u201cat least as large as Jupiter\u201d to convey the intended meaning.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, notice the use of modifier &#8211; \u201ccircling\u2026\u201d .&nbsp; This modifier modifies the noun entity that precedes it \u2013 \u201cmore than 80 massive planets\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp; As we discussed in the sentence structure discussion for choice A, this modifier does not modify the immediately preceding noun \u2013 Jupiter.&nbsp; This is a verb-ing modifier that is not separated from the preceding clause by a comma and hence modifies the preceding noun entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time we should also pay attention to the logical meaning of the sentence.&nbsp; We have determined already that \u201ccircling\u2026\u201d modifies&nbsp; \u201c80 massive planets\u201d from grammatical standpoint.&nbsp;&nbsp; From logical standpoint also, \u201ccircling\u201d must modify \u201c80 massive planets\u201d because it is a universal fact that Jupiter revolves around the Sun and no other star. Hence, there is no logical way that \u201ccircling\u201d can modify \u201cJupiter\u201d. It should modify \u201c80 massive planets\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circle: Incorrect. Use of \u201cmostly\u201d is incorrect here. Now it is an adverb that refers to the adjective following it \u201cat least as large as\u201d.
