In this article, we will look at how to negate using the set theory approach for negating statements. This article is a pre-requisite to our free session on \u201cPrethinking for CR assumptions\u201d. Hence, every Harvard admit is a registered student at GMAT Club.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assumption: Harvard only admits super-smart GMAT aspirants.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Negation technique can be used to determine if the given answer choice is the true assumption or not. In other words, it a sure shot way to validate the answer (recommended use) or to determine whether an answer choice is an assumption<\/p>\n<h3>Why does negation test work?<\/h3>\n<p>The correct answer choice is like a missing premise. This means that it has to be true for the conclusion to hold true. This implies that the negated version of the correct answer choice will shatter, falsify, or invalidate the conclusion. Hence, once we have narrowed down our answer choice(s), we can verify it by evaluating whether the negated version really shatters the conclusion or not. If it does, then your selected choice is indeed the conclusion, otherwise not.<\/p>\n<p>In the example above, the negated version of the assumption could be one of the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Harvard does not only admit super-smart GMAT aspirants.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>At least one Harvard admit is not super-smart aspirant.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Ok, sounds good. But the next question comes to mind.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>How do we negate?<\/h2>\n<p>When you think of negation, it helps to think in terms of sets. Each answer choice is \u201ca part\u201d of a superset.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, the negated statement = Super Set \u2013 Space occupied by the answer choice.<\/p>\n<pre>Negated Statement = Super set - Space occupied by the\nanswer choice<\/pre>\n<p>Let\u2019s take an example.<\/p>\n<p><em>All GMAT test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did in their first mock<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nQ: What is the\u00a0<strong>super set<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super set is the\u00a0<strong>set of possibilities\u00a0<\/strong>for GMAT takers who take the exam after one month of preparation. Let\u2019s assume that there are 100 test takers who take the exam after 1 month of the preparation. Then there are multiple possibilities that exist for this group of test-takers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>All 100 test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<li>Not All test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<li>Some test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<li>Most test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<li>Less than 50% of test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<li>No test taker who takes the exam after 1 month of preparation performs better than he\/she did on their first mock.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3574 alignnone\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/14.png 600w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/14-300x45.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a few things to note in the picture above.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Understand the Super Set<\/strong>: Note, we are only talking about a segment of population \u2013 the test takers who take the exam 1 month after preparing for their GMAT. This is our Universe or the super set. We are not concerned with test takers who take the exam after 15 days of preparation or 2 months of preparation. Words such as \u201cWho\u201d (user for people), \u201cthat\u201d (animals, corporations, etc.), \u201cwhich\u201d and \u201cthose\u201d have a segmentation effect. Therefore, any answer choice that deals with choices outside this segment \u2013 the segment in which people take the exam after 1 month of preparation \u2013 is incorrect.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Take Away:<\/strong> Words such as Who, that, which, those, etc. have a segmentation effect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>2. <strong>Understand the Sample space occupied by the choice<\/strong>: Once you have defined the Super set, understand the sample space occupied by the choice that you want to negate. Words such as all, none, some, most, etc. define these sample spacing. It is important to know what these words imply in terms of sample spaces. Taking the \u201cSuper Set\u201d in discussion and assuming that it contains 100 test takers, here is what the sample spaces mean:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"638\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\"><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\"><strong>Super Set =\u00a0 Set of 100 test takers <\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Term<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Sample Space it occupies<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">All<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">All the 100 Test takers<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">Some<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">1 to 100 test takers (including both 1 and 100). Note some does not include 0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">Not All<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">0-99 Test Takers (Notice how Not All is different from Some)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">Most<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">51-100 test takers<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"187\">None<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"451\">0 Test takers out of 100<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Understand what negation means<\/strong>: Negation or logical negation means that you select an answer choice that occupies the sample space that excludes the original choice. If it maps to another term above, then perfect, otherwise you may make the use of word \u201cNot\u201d to find the logical opposite. In the example above, the logical opposite of \u201cAll\u201d is \u201cNot All\u201d. Note, that you may be tempted to use \u201cSome\u201d but \u201csome\u201d includes All (Notice, it includes 100) and hence is not the logical opposite. Notice \u201csome\u201d = 1-100 whereas we are looking for a sample space of 0-99. Hence, this choice is not correct.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Most test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\"><strong>Incorrect<\/strong>: Only includes 51 to 100<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Not All test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\"><strong>Correct: <\/strong>This is the correct choice.\u00a0 Notice, how this occupies the complimentary sample space and is the logical opposite.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\">Less than 50% of test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did on their first mock.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"319\"><strong>Incorrect<\/strong>: Only includes 0-50<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>What if you negate the verb?<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s bring the Original choice again for clarity purposes.<\/p>\n<p><em>All GMAT test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation perform better than they did in their first mock<\/em>Notice, that in all the negated choices above, we did not modify the verb \u2013 perform better. Lets see what happens when we negate the verb. Consider the following negated choice<\/p>\n<p><em>Neg 1: Some GMAT test takers who take the exam after 1 month of preparation\u00a0do not perform better\u00a0than they did in their first mock.<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the above answer choice mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The answer choice implies that, out of 100 test takers, between 1 and 100 test takers did not perform better than they did in their first mock. This means that 0 to 99 test takers did perform better on their mock. This is the same is \u201cNot all\u201d. Hence, the above answer choice is Correct.
