Abstract Nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nouns can be either concrete or abstract depending upon what type of entity they express.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Concrete Nouns<\/strong> \u2013 Express items that one can identify using any of the 5 senses \u2013 see, touch, taste, smell, &amp; hear. e.g.&nbsp; all nouns in the sentence above are concrete nouns.<\/li><li><strong>Abstract Nouns<\/strong> \u2013 Express items that cannot be detected by the 5 senses.&nbsp; e.g. love, truth, pain, skill<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-proper-common-nouns\">Proper &amp; Common Nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nouns can be either proper or common depending upon whether they express specific names or generic entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Proper Nouns<\/strong> name specific persons, places, or things.&nbsp; They are capitalized.&nbsp; In the above sentence, the nouns \u2018Tom\u2019, \u2018California\u2019, and \u2018Cairo\u2019 are all proper nouns since they are the names of person or place.<\/li><li><strong>Common Nouns<\/strong> are general nouns.&nbsp; In the above sentence, the nouns \u2018world\u2019 and \u2018ship\u2019 are common nouns.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-singular-and-plural-nouns\">Singular and Plural Nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nouns have a number associated with them.&nbsp; Since they express entities, they can either express a single entity or a plural entity.&nbsp; Thus, nouns can be singular or plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Singular<\/strong> means one.&nbsp; A noun in its native form is singular.&nbsp;&nbsp; e.g. \u2013 ship.<\/li><li><strong>Plural <\/strong>means more than one.\n<ul>\n<li>Typically most nouns can be made plural by adding \u2013s or \u2013es after the noun. e.g.\n<ul>\n<li>ship is singular, ships is plural<br>injury is singular, injuries is plural<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Certain other nouns can be converted into plural by changing the spelling.&nbsp; e.g.\n<ul>\n<li>man is singular, men is plural<br>child is singular, children is plural<br>mouse is singular, mice is plural<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Countable and Uncountable Nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-countable-noun\">What is Countable Noun?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A countable noun is a word that can be counted and has a plural form.&nbsp; For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word \u2018onion\u2019 is a countable noun because :<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It can be counted as one onion, two onions, three onions etc.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It has a plural form (onions)<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li><em>The word \u2018person\u2019 is a countable noun because :<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>It can be counted as one person, two persons, three persons etc.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It has a plural form (persons)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By the same reasoning as above, words such as \u2018thing\u2019, \u2018job\u2019, \u2018coin\u2019, \u2018story\u2019 etc. are Countable Nouns.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-an-un-countable-noun\">What is an un-countable Noun?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An un-countable noun is a word that cannot be counted and that usually does not have a plural form.&nbsp; For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The word \u2018garlic\u2019 is a non-countable noun because : <ul><li>It cannot be counted as one garlic, two garlics, three garlics etc.<\/li><li>It does not have a plural form (garlic) <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>The word \u2018knowledge\u2019 is a non- countable noun because :<\/em> <ul><li><em>It can be counted as one knowledge, two knowledge, three knowledge etc.<\/em><\/li><li><em>It does not have a plural form (knowledges)<\/em> <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By the same reasoning as above, words such as \u2018stuff\u2019, \u2018furniture\u2019, \u2018money\u2019, \u2018rice\u2019, \u2018anger\u2019&nbsp; etc. are non-countable nouns.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-can-i-determine-if-a-noun-is-countable-or-un-countable\">How can I determine if a noun is countable or un-countable?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A word is a countable noun if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It can be counted as 1 word, 2 words, 3 words<\/li><li>It has a plural form<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A word is an un-countable noun if<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It cannot be counted as 1 word, 2 words, 3 words<\/li><li>It does not have a plural form<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-adjectives-can-be-used-with-countable-and-un-countable-nouns\">What adjectives can be used with countable and un-countable nouns?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantity adjectives such as \u2018few\u2019, \u2018number\u2019 etc. can only be used with countable nouns.
