{"id":289,"date":"2020-05-19T16:58:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T11:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/?p=289"},"modified":"2022-11-23T17:28:03","modified_gmt":"2022-11-23T11:58:03","slug":"ambiguous-pronoun-nobody-knows-exactly-how-many-languages-og1291","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/ambiguous-pronoun-nobody-knows-exactly-how-many-languages-og1291\/","title":{"rendered":"Ambiguous Pronoun &#8211; Nobody knows exactly how many languages&#8230;OG12#91"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">A <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\">2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">min read <\/span><\/span>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Nobody knows exactly how many languages there are in the world, partly because of the difficulty of distinguishing between a language and the sublanguages or dialects within it, but those who have tried to count typically have found about five thousand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Understand the meaning of the sentence and determine the logical antecedent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Per the sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>No one knows the exact number of languages in the world<\/li><li>This is because of the difficulty of distinguishing between two things:<\/li><li>A language<\/li><li>Sublanguages and dialects within it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, it will only make sense if \u201cit\u201d refers to \u201clanguage\u201d -&gt; difficulty of distinguishing between<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A language and sublanguages<\/li><li>A language and the dialects with this language.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus \u201clanguage\u201d is the logical antecedent for the pronoun \u201cit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Determine if any other antecedents can be referred to by this pronoun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since pronoun \u201cit\u201d is singular, here are the possible antecedents \u2013 the singular nouns<br>\u2022 World<br>\u2022 Language<br>It will not make sense for \u201cit\u201d to refer to world. Also, world is too far away from the pronoun and in fact it is in a logically different part of the sentence.<br>There is no pronoun ambiguity in this sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-take-away-message\">Take away Message<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So in this sentence, we went purely by the meaning and decided the logical antecedent for the pronoun.
