Confusion is created when we do not have clarity about what kind of a condition these connectives represent. In our <a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/gmat-critical-reasoning-necessary-vs-sufficient-conditions\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous article<\/a>, we have already discussed the nature of &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/gmat-critical-reasoning-necessary-vs-sufficient-conditions\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>a necessary but not sufficient condition<\/em><\/a>. In this article, we\u2019ll learn about the second category of conditions and answer the question \u2013&nbsp;<em>&#8220;<strong>What are sufficient<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>but not necessary conditions?<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em>. We are not given that <em>eating too many sweets<\/em> <strong>is the only way<\/strong> <em>to gain weight<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>760 on the GMAT corresponds to 99 percentile. What does 740 correspond to? <a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/understanding-gmat-score-gmat-percentiles-good-gmat-score\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Understand GMAT scores and percentiles in this article.<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-3-another-question-is-a-sufficient-condition-also-a-necessary-one\">2.3 Another Question \u2013 Is a Sufficient Condition Also a Necessary one?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is pretty much similar to what we have discussed in the previous section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sufficient condition is only <u>one of the means<\/u> to achieve a particular outcome. This means that there could be other means to achieve the outcome. Therefore, a sufficient condition is not necessary to be fulfilled in order to achieve the desired outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, let\u2019s think along our weight gain example to reaffirm our understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does one have to <u>necessarily eat too many sweets<\/u> to lead to weight gain? Not really!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As discussed previously, there could be other reasons that could lead to weight gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"391\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sufficient-but-not-necessary-conditions.png\" alt=\"sufficient but not necessary conditions\" class=\"wp-image-13533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sufficient-but-not-necessary-conditions.png 391w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sufficient-but-not-necessary-conditions-300x292.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement<em> If you eat too many sweets, you will gain weight <\/em>does not mean that one cannot gain weight through other means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There <em><u>can be<\/u><\/em> <strong>alternate causes<\/strong> that can lead to weight gain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As discussed,<em> One may eat a lot of fat-laden products and consequently, gain weight. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One might gain weight by not exercising enough.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while the given condition of <em>eating too many sweets<\/em> is a sufficient one to gain weight but by no means is it a necessary one. <em>The occurrence of the result might take place by the fulfillment of similar other sufficient conditions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-4-last-question-what-can-cannot-be-inferred-when-a-sufficient-condition-is-given\">2.4 Last Question \u2013 What can\/cannot be inferred when a Sufficient Condition is given?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, we understood that a sufficient condition is not always necessary for the outcome to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>i.e., when we are given \u201cIf X is done, then Y occurs.\u201d, then X is not the only way for Y to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what else can we infer from the information \u2018If X is done, then Y occurs.\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, we can definitely say that whenever X is done, Y must also occur. This can be definitely inferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, can we say the same holds true for the converse? i.e., if Y has occurred, can we infer that X must have been done?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Not really! As discussed before, X is not the only way for Y to occur. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, think along the lines of the <em>weight gain<\/em> example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have gained weight. then we cannot infer\/conclude that you must have had too many sweets. (You could have gained weight for any of the many other reasons such as a sedentary lifestyle, eating fatty foods, etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Therefore, the <u>occurrence of the outcome<\/u> is <strong><u>not a guarantee<\/u><\/strong> of a <u>sufficient condition being fulfilled<\/u>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Impressing an admissions committee with your application is a guarantee of securing an admit. <a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/how-to-impress-mba-admissions-committee-dos-and-donts\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn the dos and don&#8217;ts of impressing an admissions committee.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-5-simple-example-sufficient-but-not-necessary-conditions\">2.5&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Simple Example &#8211; Sufficient but not Necessary Conditions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s put our learnings in the context of some simple examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-2-5-1-example-1\">2.5.1 Example 1<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em><u>If it rains, then Michelle carries an umbrella<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/necessary-but-not-sufficient-conditions.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17127\" width=\"664\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/necessary-but-not-sufficient-conditions.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/necessary-but-not-sufficient-conditions-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/necessary-but-not-sufficient-conditions-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/necessary-but-not-sufficient-conditions-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This statement indicates that the occurrence of rain is a <strong>sufficient<\/strong> <strong><em>condition<\/em><\/strong> for Michelle to carry an umbrella<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>If it is raining, one can safely infer that Michelle will have an umbrella with him.<\/em><\/li><li>But at the same time, <em>if Michelle is carrying an umbrella<\/em>, then we cannot infer\/conclude that it<em> must be raining.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The occurrence of rain is sufficient for Michelle to carry an umbrella. However, this does not mean that Michelle will carry an umbrella <u>only when<\/u> it rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle could carry an umbrella because of other reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>She could carry an umbrella when the sun shines hard and therefore it is hot.<\/li><li>She could be suffering from a migraine, which is triggered by the sun, and therefore could carry an umbrella.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these scenarios could be <strong><em>sufficient conditions \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>individually<strong> \u2013<\/strong><\/em> for Michelle to carry an umbrella, but <strong><em>by no means is any of the conditions a necessary condition, a minimum condition that has to take place for Michelle to carry an umbrella.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, rain is a <em>sufficient but not necessary<\/em> condition for Michelle to carry an umbrella<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/how-long-does-it-take-to-prepare-for-the-gmat\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">If you want to ace the GMAT, you should know long will you take to prepare for it. Ronaldo\u2019s presence in the team is sufficient to ensure that Real Madrid will win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What <strong><u>cannot be inferred<\/u><\/strong> from this statement is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>If Real Madrid won the match against Barcelona, then Ronaldo must have definitely played<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Or<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>The only way for Real Madrid to win is if Ronaldo plays<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us say in a particular season, Real Madrid won against Barcelona. From this can one infer that Ronaldo had played against Barcelona in that match?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Not at all!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The match could have been won even without Ronaldo playing against Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe some other player scored numerous goals to make the goal tally higher than Barcelona\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe Barcelona did not play as well as expected that day and lost to Real Madrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So, in the above argument, Ronaldo playing against Barcelona is a sufficient condition but not a necessary condition. His playing guarantees the win, but it is not the only condition required for Real Madrid\u2019s win. Even when Ronaldo is not playing Real Madrid can win.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-2-5-3-example-3\">2.5.3 Example 3<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em><u>Whenever there is a shortage of water, the yield of rice crops gets hampered.<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-sufficient-but-not-necessary.jpg\" alt=\"gmat sufficient but not necessary\" class=\"wp-image-17130\" width=\"715\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-sufficient-but-not-necessary.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-sufficient-but-not-necessary-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-sufficient-but-not-necessary-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What <strong><u>can be inferred<\/u><\/strong> from this statement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>When there is a scarcity of water, the yields from the rice fields will be low.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, an inadequate water supply is enough to guarantee low yields from the rice crop. i.e., water scarcity is a sufficient condition on its own to bring about a bad impact on the yield of rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What <strong><u>cannot be inferred<\/u><\/strong> from the statement is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>If the yields from the rice fields were low, then there must have been shortage of water for that particular seed time.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Let us say that in a particular year, the yields from the rice fields was very low. From that, we cannot infer that the reason behind the low yields was water shortage. It is possible that the yields were low that year despite no water shortage. Maybe, the fertilizers used that year were not effective or a new variety of seeds were used but did not give desired results. Therefore, water availability may not be the only cause behind a bad yield of rice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thus, water shortage is one of the sufficient but not necessary conditions that hamper the yield of rice<\/em><em>. Even without water being scarce, rice crops may give low yields.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-6-full-length-questions-official-and-unofficial\">2.6&nbsp;Full-Length Questions (Official and Unofficial)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In GMAT we often have arguments that end in conditions being laid down by the author. And the selection of the correct option depends entirely on our understanding of what that condition implies. Answer choices appear to be very confusing if we do not have clarity about whether the condition is sufficient one or a necessary one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For e.g., when a sufficient condition (such as <em><u>If X then Y<\/u><\/em>) is given in the passage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><em>An incorrect answer choice for a weaken question<\/em><\/strong> could mention another sufficient condition to achieve the outcome<\/li><li><em>I<u>f Z (without X) then Y<\/u><\/em><\/li><li>Similarly, <strong><em>an<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>incorrect answer choice in an inference question<\/em><\/strong> could say:\n<ul>\n<li>If the sufficient condition is not fulfilled, then the outcome will not be achieved.<\/li>\n<li><em>That is, <u>If not X, then not Y<\/u><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li>If the outcome is achieved, then the sufficient condition must have been fulfilled.\n<ul>\n<li><em><u>=&gt; If Y happened, then X must have happened<\/u><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us look at some full-length questions which have a \u201csufficient but not necessary condition\u201d as a part of its conclusion and incorrect choices as mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Take a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/gmat-official-guide-2019-vs-gmat-og-2018-review\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review of Official guide 2019<\/a> and decide whether is it worth buying.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-2-6-1-example-1-gmat-prep\">2.6.1 Example 1 (GMAT PREP)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve years ago, and again five years ago, there were extended periods when the Darfir Republic&#8217;s currency, the pundra, was weak: its value was unusually low relative to the world&#8217;s most stable currencies. Both times a weak pundra made Darfir&#8217;s manufactured products a bargain on world markets, and Darfir&#8217;s exports were up substantially. Now some politicians are saying that, in order to cause another similarly sized increase in exports, the government should allow the pundra to become weak again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of the following, if true, provides the government with the strongest grounds to doubt that the politicians&#8217; recommendation, if followed, will achieve its aim?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Several of the politicians now recommending that the pundra be allowed to become weak made that same recommendation before each of the last two periods of currency weakness.<\/li><li>After several decades of operating well below peak capacity, Darfir&#8217;s manufacturing sector is now operating at near-peak levels.<\/li><li>The economy of a country experiencing a rise in exports will become healthier only if the country&#8217;s currency is strong or the rise in exports is significant.<\/li><li>Those countries whose manufactured products compete with Darfir&#8217;s on the world market all currently have stable currencies.<\/li><li>A sharp improvement in the efficiency of Darfir&#8217;s manufacturing plants would make Darfir&#8217;s products a bargain on world markets even without any weakening of the pundra relative to other currencies.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h6 id=\"h-2-6-1-1-passage-analysis\">2.6.1.1 Passage analysis<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The passage talks about pundra, Darfir\u2019s currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-critical-reasoning-necessary-sufficient.jpg\" alt=\"gmat cr necessary sufficient\" class=\"wp-image-17131\" width=\"723\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-critical-reasoning-necessary-sufficient.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-critical-reasoning-necessary-sufficient-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-critical-reasoning-necessary-sufficient-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Historical precedence has been provided here about a certain observed relationship between the value of pundra and the export of Darfir\u2019s manufactured goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twice in the past, an unusually weak pundra made Darfir\u2019s manufactured goods cheap in the world markets. As a result, the exports increased on both occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, certain politicians are using the two instances in the past to set up a goal in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is \u2013 Similar increase in exports<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan is \u2013 Make the pundra weak again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conclusion therefore is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>If pundra is made weak, exports will rise.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thus, the weakening of the pundra has been considered as a sufficient condition to achieve an increase in exports.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The politicians clearly suppose that history will repeat itself and things will happen in the same way as they had happened in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, o<em>ne way to weaken the politicians\u2019 recommendation is to show that the situation is no longer the same anymore for their plan to work<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 id=\"h-2-6-1-2-correct-answer-choice-analysis\">2.6.1.2 Correct answer choice analysis<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Option B is an interesting choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It says <em>for many decades<\/em> Darfir\u2019s manufacturing sector was producing way below its ability to produce goods. But now the units are working almost at their peak levels or maximum capacity to produce. Which means at present the scope for increasing production is almost nil and even if pundra is made weak, the exports cannot be increased because <strong><em>production cannot be further increased. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This weakens the recommendation. It shows that the situation has changed and the recommendation may not lead to the desired results any longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It follows the idea of \u201cIf X then Y\u201d and weakens it by saying \u201cIf X, then not Y\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><u>Close but incorrect choice<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Option E<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears to weaken the recommendation but does not really weaken the underlying condition of sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, this option offers an alternate cause for achieving the goal. <strong><em>And is, therefore, a tempting but incorrect choice.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It moves away from the structure of \u201cIf X, then Y\u201d.<\/li><li>It also says even with Z (alternate cause), Y (increase exports) is possible.<\/li><li>And, it calls for improving <em>the efficiency of Darfir&#8217;s manufacturing plants <\/em>to make goods cheaper in the world markets, without weakening the pundra.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Or in other words, Y can happen without X<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And as we learned previously, a sufficient condition does not mean that other conditions are not present. <\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But does it actually weaken the recommendation of the politicians?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not really!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This option <u>does not show<\/u> that the recommendation will not work. <em>Rather it shows that there are <u>other ways of achieving<\/u> increase in exports without actually showing that a weakened pundra will not achieve increase in exports.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"h-2-6-2-example-2-e-gmat-s-proprietary-question\">2.6.2&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Example 2 (e-GMAT&#8217;s Proprietary Question)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-CR-necessary-sufficient.jpg\" alt=\"gmat cr\" class=\"wp-image-17132\" width=\"717\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-CR-necessary-sufficient.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-CR-necessary-sufficient-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/e-gmat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/GMAT-CR-necessary-sufficient-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the brain grows older, dendrites &#8211; the antennas by which neurons receive information from other neurons &#8211; begin to shrink, thereby reducing the communication capability between neurons and hence our ability to learn new things. Increasing the mental activity of the brain has shown to reverse the shrinking of dendrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of the following can be most logically concluded from the statements above?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If mental activity of brain increases with aging, then the ability to learn new things as the brain grows older might not reduce considerably.<\/li><li>A brain that is mentally more active as it ages has higher potential to learn new things than the brain of same age that reduced its level of mental activity.<\/li><li>Individuals whose mental activity levels do not increase as they grow older are likely to experience a decline in learning ability<\/li><li>By increasing one&#8217;s mental activity, it is possible to continuously increase one&#8217;s ability to learn.<\/li><li>Dementia, a disease that stems from mental decline, is much more likely to develop in individuals who lead a sedentary life as they grow old than in those who don\u2019t.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h6 id=\"h-2-6-2-1-passage-analysis\">2.6.2.1 Passage Analysis<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The passage explores the relationship between the mental activity of the brain and the shrinking of dendrites as the brain ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Per the passage, as the brain ages, dendrites begin to reduce in size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These dendrites are the antennas used by neurons to transmit information among themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So<em>, as the dendrites shrink<\/em>, there is a decrease in the capacity for communication between neurons which in turn <em>leads to a decrease in the ability to learn new things<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the mental activity of the brain is increased=X<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the shrinking of the dendrites can be reversed=Y<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>An increase in mental activity<\/em> <em>of the brain<\/em> =X<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>slows down the decrease in the ability to learn things <\/em>=Y<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 id=\"h-2-6-2-2-correct-answer-choice-analysis\">2.6.2.2 Correct answer choice analysis<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Option A<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If mental activity of brain increases with aging, then the ability to learn new things as the brain grows older might not reduce considerably<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The ability to learn new things reduces along with age.<\/li><li>This decrease in ability to learn new things is related to the decrease in size of dendrites.<\/li><li>Increased mental activity has the propensity to reduce the dendrite shrinkage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, essentially, increased mental activity has the capacity to slow down the decrease in the ability to learn things<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><u>Close but incorrect choice<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Option C<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Individuals whose mental activity levels do not increase as they grow older are likely to experience a decline in learning ability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This option looks tempting because it also draws a <em>seemingly similar but reverse<\/em> relationship between the level of brain activity and the ability to learn new things by a brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is a change here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Instead of X, we have a \u201cnot X\u201d = no increase in level of mental activity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And instead of Y, we have a \u201cnot Y\u201d = no slow-down in the brain\u2019s ability to learn new things<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates confusion because <u>the passage presents the relationship \u201cIf X, then Y\u201d.<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><u>And so, we feel the reverse should also be true, i.e., If not X, then not Y\u201d<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But this is where we go wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As discussed in our examples, there could be other ways in which the ability to learn new things could be increased even <em>without an increase in the mental activity of the brain<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, there could be stimulants\/drugs which when taken, could help in improving the brain\u2019s ability to learn new things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, this answer choice is incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-takeaway-sufficient-but-not-necessary-conditions\">Takeaway &#8211; Sufficient but not Necessary Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we are looking at passages in which the outcomes depend on certain conditions, then it is important for us to be able to evaluate whether those conditions are sufficient or necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As discussed above a \u201csufficient\u201d condition is one which \u201c<strong>guarantees<em>\u201d that the result will take place<\/em><\/strong>, but it is not a necessary condition that has to be fulfilled for the result to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terms such as if, whenever, anytime, etc., indicate the presence of a condition that is on its own sufficient, and they act as guides to our understanding the implications thereof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, one needs to read the entire passage carefully to determine the presence of \u201csufficiency\u201d or \u201cnecessity\u201d and apply the understanding accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the use of simple and easy to follow examples, the article helps us to have a better understanding of a sufficient condition and its implications.
