How to calculate the total cost of taking the GMAT?

We have chosen three scenarios to explain how to calculate the total cost of taking the GMAT. All situations will have some steps of the GMAT preparation cycle shown below. For illustration purpose, we have take the GMAT fees in India and USA:

A typical GMAT preparation cycle would include the following steps and associated GMAT fees –

  6. Requesting additional score reports
  7. Applying to Business Schools

This cycle is not exhaustive and can include other steps

Scenario 1: You score well on your first attempt

GMAT Cost

In this scenario, a student registers for the GMAT, prepares for it, does not reschedule the test, aces the GMAT on the first attempt, and applies to 10 chosen business schools. In this case, he/she will incur the following cost:

GMAT Cost categoriesGMAT fees (Test center exam)
GMAT Registration FeeUSD$275

For the retake, the student registers for the GMAT again but does not necessarily incur additional costs for the GMAT preparation.

Here is a 5-step strategy for a successful GMAT retake.

To assess the last GMAT attempt, he/she buys the Enhanced Score Report (ESR) and, on the second attempt, aces the GMAT and applies to 10 chosen business schools. In this case, he/she will incur the following GMAT cost:

GMAT Cost CategoriesGMAT fees (Test center fees)
GMAT Registration FeeUSD$275

How many business schools should I apply to with GMAT?

It depends on your GMAT score. First, take a look at your target business school’s average GMAT score of the last incoming batch. If your score is 20+ points above it, you should definitely target those schools.

GMAT-fees-how-many-b-schools-should-i-apply-to

When it comes to applications, there are three categories of Business Schools

  1. Reasonable ones (Your profile and GMAT score are a good fit)
  2. Optimistic ones (You are pushing your luck here, but there is a small chance of admission)
  3. Safety nets (You are almost sure of an admit)

Try applying to 2-3 schools of each category during application rounds. In calculating the cost of taking a GMAT, I have assumed you are applying to 10 business schools. GMAT sends five score reports for free. For every additional report, it charges USD$35 each.

The definition of ‘economically disadvantaged’ is as per the criteria set by individual schools. Here is a detailed article on GMAT fee waivers and how to get them.
